I'm putting this in the beginners circle because I think it'll help out here more.
I'm in an MTT on Ultimate Bet. Early in the tourney. I'm dealt QQ and a player 3 seats to my right goes all in. Everyone else folds and he shows AJo. Flop is Jxx. Turn is blank. And the river is another J. So he pulls down my QQ with trip Jacks.
Now, I do NOT believe in the concepts of bad beats or suck outs. The way I figure it is that HE is a SEVEN card game and card number seven is just as important as card number one. Either I won the hand or I lost the hand. Doesn't matter to me if it happens on the flop or the river. Sure, I was dissapointed and a little concerned about my now semi-crippled stack. But I was in no way mad, or even irritated for that matter.
So I was about to give him a "nh" (for "nice hand") in the chat window when HE pops into chat with, "LOL! Sure stuck it to you with that one, huh DeanCarl?"
Now, about the only time I'd get upset playing poker was when my BankRoll was in jeopardy and, re a previous post, I've got that one pretty much under control. But this, I have to say, irritated me quite a bit.
Got my revenge a few hands later when he went all in again, this time post flop and I was sitting there with a nut flush. I typed "bye, bye ... clown" in the chat window and about 5 other players chimed in with the likes of "you got THAT right" and "good ridance".
I've watched a lot of the "big boys" play on TV. To tell the truth I have NO respect for the likes of Helmuth and Malouski (or whatever his name is) no matter how many braclets they've managed to collect. Ledderer, Ivy, Brunsen and the like are the ones I respect and emulate.
I guess the point of all this rambling is to say to anyone just starting out that, along with poker skills like stealing blinds, the check/raise, knowing good starting hands and others, another skill you can bring to the table is a little class. It'll make life a lot easier for you and others ... and just might help your game out a bit.

I've learned to ignore the chat window entirely. If I read all the trash talk I get angry. But maybe I just don't understand the psychology of men or something.

Nice post, Dean Carl. I agree with you, and I'd love to discuss this in depth. Tilting the opposition is a valid strategy, but how often, if ever, should it be employed? Is winning ($) more important than other considerations? Do you and I favor class over asshat-tilt-attack because our personalities favor it? -- I could tilt someone, but probably would be on tilt myself trying to get worked up enough to be cruel. Did you see Tony G. on WPT the other night (Mr. Sandpaper) ?

Tilting Asshats discussion:

Selective tilting? Vengance tilting? Profit tilting? No verbal tilting, cards only?

No respect for Hellmuth? C'mon man, you may not like his attitude sometimes but you have to respect his poker ability. He is one of the best.

I disagree with you 'Rilla.
I feel that Hellmuth is certainly the best player at obtaining reads in the world, and he's a good contender for world's best player. The reads I have seen him put on guys simply astound me sometimes.
But there's one downside...
He's a cock.

I agree with you that his books/videos leave much to be desired but that is because he isn't a good teacher. As dwarman said he has an amazing ability to read his opponents. I've seen him make many amazing lay downs and called big pots with little that many players wouldn't be able to do. As far as poker instinct goes I think he one of the best.

That might have been a tad rude but...
I use the chat some, just to make the alredy loose players go a little ' I'm gonne get him this time'.
If you guys get a little tilted by a small tease or something, I'm sure as hell gonna use it. The chat is a great tool to get the game going your way... as far as I am concerned.
....but beeing rude will just make people leave the table or ignore you.

i think he means to act like you have won before.
I can understand why someone said they like doyle and ivey and the others who act with class.
the amazing lack of class on line is stunning. actually the amazing lack of class at a B+M room is amazing also.
peace

Let me start out by saying that I enjoy a quite table, with the occassionaly NH or VNH and TY. Thats the way I want to play. Or "nice free card play" to tell a player that you recongized his move.
The other night I was at a table, when a "fish" vp$P > 40% was telling other fish how to play. And then not following her own advice. I found this amusing. This I found a little amusing because she is telling everyone how to play and losing hand over fist. BTW she lost $150 at a $2/$4 game in a little over an hour.
Same night on a different table there was a guy named "Lab-lover", lets just say that the morons took this name down the wrong road. I don't like it, I tried not to let it bother me because I had no part in the conversation, eventually I just moved to another table.

Read this, though.
"Suppose you were a spy, and were at a cocktail party in Budapest, trying to pick up some important information. Would you be showing off your handy breath mint box-sized camera? Would you be telling your fellow partygoers how many languages you speak and how many exotic capital cities you’ve visited?"

first post here may as well be on this as anything else (this i might know something about...)
i have no issue with chat - never had in any of the games / sports i've played. i think it can often be useful extra info. what i just don't get is the people who type 'bad play' or 'you're sh1t, get off the table' after someone does something 'against the rules' as far as they're concerned. not raising with a pocket pair pre-flop, chasing a gutshot straight or some other thing. however they did it, they just won - and yes i fully accept that certain practices if repeated will lead to loss but for all the guy who lost knows the winner might just have been mixing up the play?
the other thing is 'typing from the grave' they have to get a comment in after they've been moved from the table - people are very bitter out there aren't they or is it just me? it's as though there is some law that says 'you may have put your money in and called but you aren't allowed to make your hand and beat mr.whiney on the river, sorry'...it happens to everyone sooner or later, live with it.
and breathe...
apologies - didn't realise how much that stuff bothered me
i'm working through the posts - lots of excellent advice and experience there - thanks to all who contribute.
