This play has always confused me when others do it. I rarely do it myself and the only reason I can see for doing it is to get more money in the pot when you have AA-QQ in early position. Is this an accurate assessment of the play?
Here's an example from today. Obviously, I didn't have a spectacular hand, so it was a pretty easy fold.
PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em Tourney, Big Blind is t20 (9 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)
UTG+1 (t1530)
MP1 (t1520)
MP2 (t1450)
MP3 (t1280)
CO (t1650)
Hero (t1650)
SB (t1480)
BB (t1440)
UTG =#A500AF(Villian)/ (t1500)
Preflop: Hero is Button with A , J .
UTG =#A500AF(Villian)/ calls t20, 4 folds, CO calls t20, Hero raises to t160, 2 folds, UTG =#A500AF(Villian)/ raises to t460, CO folds, Hero folds.
Final Pot: t670

yep
its an extremely weak play when stacks are deep, but an extremely potent play whenever effective M<12.

It can be a very effective play at low limit ring too. Most of the fishies just don't realize this usually means AA or KK. An alternative which works very well at low limit SNGs and MTTs is to just push outright with AA early in the tourney. It usually gets called enough (and in an R&A it is probably the best play because people are crazy ass fools the first hour) to make it a very good play.

I'm very happy when players do this with KK and AA in ring games. You know what they have and you can hopefully hit a monster and stack them....
To the original poster; well played.
