Thats probably just about how id play it.
I think there is about enough chance that hes trying to buy you off your cbet + the chance you will hit a straight and hurt his 2 pair/set + the chance you just have a higher pair than him for this to work.

PP missed his set, He's hoping you have overcards and can get you off the pot or he never hit his AK Knowing you had low PP. I never check the river unless I'm sure he's beat and he's caught a piece of something and I know he will bet.
