    Default The inadvertent slow roll

I was playing the $1/$2 tables this weekend and at a table with a few drinking novices, a few experienced players and a few inbetween. Basically a pretty good mix.

The short story is that at showdown with three players left an inexperienced player, first to show, looked at her hand for a bit (I assume to figure out if she won without revealing her hole cards) then mucked face down. Next to show quickly flipped over medium pocket pair for trips. The last to show may not have been paying attention ( I wasn't in the hand, trying to flag down a server for more adult beverages ) and finally showed the cards completing a flush and having the winning hand.

Trips thought he was slow rolled and it got ugly fast. The floor had to come and calm things down.

As a beginner i can put myself in the other persons shoes and see the need for a few seconds to determine if I (or in this case him) rivered a straight flush or whatever, instead of just having a pair or something like that. But I also wouldn't want to purposefully slow roll anyone.

I assume the best way to prevent a slow roll is to show your hand at showdown immediately and let the dealer sort out the winner.

Have you ever been slow rolled, and how did you react?

There are still some people who slowroll online and its pretty classless, but the funny thing is I've seen it backfire on them and they got sucked out on instead lol

Yeah, everyone has been slow rolled.

Flagging down a server is not a good excuse, one can flag the server with the cards up.

    Wasn't me.

That's why I'm trying to figure out why the reaction was so strong. I didn't see the whole thing.

I don't do it, but I'm not sure why. It seems by far the best strategy to slow-roll whenever possible, if we're just looking at maximizing our EV at every decision.

I thought along these lines as well.

If we know someone is gonna tilt from being slow-rolled and we think we can take advantage of it; why not do it?

Is it also the best strategy to angle-shoot at every opportunity? I mean, it's probably also strategically sound to talk about how much you love not washing your hands after you take a shit while at the live poker table as well to gross out the competition.

In all seriousness, I don't really care either way. I'd love to slow roll the hell out of people left, right and center. I slow rolled my girlfriend while playing Monopoly Deal a couple of nights ago, and it was very satisfying.

I need to find more places to slow roll irl.

It's a game of psychological warfare.

Don't get yourself into something that will tilt you. If the person you slow-rolled gets all aggro, and that even remotely influences your play, then it's prob. a -EV decision.

However, I'm kind of intrigued by the massive support for slow-rolling in this thread.

    We're talking micro-stakes table games in a B&M casino.
No one is there to earn their living, they're there for some fun and they like the game.

Personally, I think if it's clearly a game that the players are doing for fun, then why bother to inject such ridiculous ploys?
If you're really that much better than the field, then why do you need to resort to crap like angle-shooting?

Sure, if that's your thrill, then I guess I don't see a problem with it. If that's the game you're there to play, then fine.

Personally, if I was at a table with someone blatantly being a douche at every opportunity, I'd likely ask to switch tables, and I'd make sure the floor knew why. They can deal with it however they like. There are plenty of other poker rooms in town. They can choose the room they wish to offer.
