Question for the number crunchers amongst you: It seems very common for more than one person to get pocket pairs in a hand. We've all seen it. It seems so common, in fact, that when I get a pair I tend to assume that at least one other player is holding a pair as well.

When you think about it, the fact that you hold a pair should slightly increase the odds that another player will...if two players hold a pair, then it should increase the odds that a third player does...and so on....because each pair dealt leaves more pairs in the deck.

I don't know if it's statistically significant enough to be useful in any way, but I am curious as to how it crunches out.

I dont think it makes much of a difference. If you get delt an A, and then you get delt another A thats only 1/51 of the remaining cards that have changed. I dont think that really makes a huge difference. Sure it will make some difference but i doubt its big enough to notice except after like..... a million hands?
gabe: Ive dropped almost 100k in the past 35 days.

bigspenda73: But how much did you win?

although you are more statistically probable to geta pair somewhere in the hand than getting nothing, getting pocket pair only will SLIGHTLY increase the chances of someone else getting a pocket pair. I would never, for instance, think 'crap i have pocket 8's so now the others have a bigger chance of getting a pocket pair too'. Me just saying

I don't know if someone answered before, but here's some numbers:
If you have a pp, there are 73 other possible ways to make a pp. If you don't have a pp, there are 72 possible ways to make a pp. Since you already have 2 cards there are 1225 possible starting hands so:
AA => 5.96% chance someone else has a pair
AK => 5.88% chance someone else has a pair

EDIT: These are the odds that any one person has a pair, not that anyone does. That would vary depending on the number of people at the table

As for the KK,QQ,JJ. That's pretty improbable (1 in 10,000,000)
