How's it going everyone? My name is Brent and I have been playing poker, (specifically no limit hold'm) for about 6 months now. I have been doing pretty good with some friends I play with, but today I played with a new group of friends and got beat pretty bad. I ended up losing only $10, and I was the second person out of eight to leave the table. How can I prevent this from happening in the future? This post is mainly to get this off my back but I also would appriciate any helpful tips. Thanks alot.

-Brent

Haha, you're asking how to prevent ever losing?

Don't play anymore. I think that's the only correct answer there is.

Brent, What were you playing? How many people? How loose or tight was it? NL or Limit?

michael has a point. To keep from ever losing, you have to stop playing.

But you will need to ask yourself, and us a lot more specific questions to get an answer.

For example, how did you think you played with the new people? Did you get sucked out? Did you play looser trying to show off how good you are?

How do you normally play? Was anything different?

Ask more.
I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway.
Whatever it is...
I'm against it.

I tried to play tight and I did but the community cards would scare me off. For ex: one hand i had was poket 7's, so I put my two chips in to play. The flop was Ace, King, and a 10. My friends would bet and I would fold. I kept losing money like this over and over again. There were eight people playing on a $10 buy in. It was my first time playing with these people and I wanted to show them who was boss but ended up finishing in 7th place. I know that there will be times where I win some and lose some, but I was expecting to do alot better than 7th place.

That was exactly what I expected to see.

When an athlete plays his sport against new players, he can play harder and faster to show them up.

Poker players are not athletes. You cannot play harder or faster and still win. Against newbies, just make sure you are playing more correctly. If you commit a portion of your chips to a play pre-flop, be ready to back up that play post flop.

Thanks man. I try to play "tight-aggresive" but I don't always follow through with that plan. Another thing is I have to be the best in everything I do, whether it's surfing, playing poker, etc.... I guess it's natural for everyone to be like that though and that's why this defeat was so hard on me.

You can also take this with a grain of salt.

The next time you end up playing these guys. They'll think you're dead money and underestimate you. That's when you make them pay through the ass. Just play tight and play aggressive when you get the cards.

Welcome to the boards. There is alot to learn from the people here. So don't be afraid to ask anything. The only dumb questions are the ones not asked and anything Fishstick says. :P

P.S.- We love to make smart ass remarks too if you haven't noticed already. We do it cause we care.

Yeah, there just wasn't any kind of info in that first post that could give us anything to answer your question. It sounds like you just didn't get the cards, and I think we've all been there.

In Jes Gru's first home tourney I finished 2nd out of 20 players. He had another one last week with 18 players and I was one of the first people out, including rebuying the one time you can in the first two hours. Played for 2 1/2 - 3 hours, and I never won one single hand. I never had any pocket pair, and the best preflop hand I had was AJ once, which entirely missed the board. Plus, I only had top pair once, on my last hand where I called an all in as a rather small stack and lost to a flush draw.

It was frustrating, because besides Jes Gru and one or two other guys, everyone else is extremely new to the game and doesn't really know what they're doing. But in a way that does make it more difficult, as you have to have the cards to win hands as nearly every hand is called down to a showdown.
