I like to talk when I play poker live. I find it gives me and edge over my competitors. Fairly new to online poker play, but I've noticed nobody sends messages while playing to get inside the other players heads. Does this strategy not work in online play?

It can, but usually it's just too easy for folks to turn off the chat box and not even notice what others are saying. The only time I've seen it work is when someone starts tilting, yelling "DONK DONK FISH!!" Then you can rev 'em up. But I keep my chat to "nh" for the donk plays that bust me but that I'd like them to repeat - over and over and over.

i like to get on table. type along the lines of "...... you're a w****r, and i'm gonna win all your chips" to the person with the most chips. Then turn chat off.
only joshing....though i may try this tonight.

part of becoming a winning player is being disciplined.
and staying disciplined can mean keeping quiet in the chat...when you really dont want to.
most of the time, the chatty players suck (much like life, where the guy running off at the mouth usually knows shit about shit). and the berating only chases off the fish.
also, keeping absolutely silent CAN be the biggest tilt-provocation one could ever use.

I chat with people if I have something to chat about, but most of the time I block chat online. It is handy if you notice a player has developed some kind of vendetta against another player, because it can mean free chips from both of them.

I never chat. I try to focus on game. But chatting can bring out the playing personality of your oppenent. So maybe its a good thing.

I have a tough time keeping it down too. Analyzing my/others play out loud isn't too helpful even tho our live game is all friends. I'm trying hard to curb it.

SO, SO, SO true. I love being at these tables, where one guy has something to prove vs. another player... and then you're the third party who comes over the top with your monster and scoops a huge one. (BTW, what, if anything, do you say then?)
Seems you get this at the lower stakes more than the higher, which is pretty humorous. Lots of Brunsons playing at $10 NL.

Its always best to keep your mouth shut both live and online. Has worked for me for years. Talking gives away waaaaaaay too much information if your not careful. Listening to others is much more valuable in my opinion.

Indeed. It is actually fairly hard to find a table in the nano limit games where someone isn't pissed off about the river card. I've been chewed out a hundred times by people who have looked at a starting hand chart a few times, decided they know all there is to know, then being horrified when my 9 outs give me a 'suckout' river flush (for which I had the odds all along). It can be handy when they get really mad at you and start reraising you with ATC. I used to mention things like pot odds, but now I just stay totally silent and let them get up a good head of steam.

Good advice. But like any other thing at small/micro stakes, the fish aren't really paying attention. If there are enough sharks at your table for this matter, you need to find a different table.
My best chat is "nh" for anything fishy I want to see repeated a lot - like the time the guy went all-in with QTo preflop against my KK and caught a full house by the turn. I jumped up, swore vehemently, then sat down and typed "nh," knowing it's +EV if he thinks he's Johnny Chan now. Donk types back "thx." LoL.

It has kind of reached the point where 'nh' is code for 'ZOMG YOU DONK I CANT BELIEVE YOU CALLED THAT!'.
That said, it is more polite. And anything I can do to create positive associations with their poor play is a good thing. Just as it hurts to lose to a 2 outer on the river, and it happening a lot can cause you to doubt your own poker skills, the opposite is true at the fishy end of the pool. Winning a bit pot a few times with totally crappy play can help to cement terrible play into many players - helping to ensure that the other 80 times they call with 2 outs they pay me off.
It's a team thing, sort of. Half of the morons that suck out on me probably won't last long enough, or suck long enough, for me to win the money back directly from them. Some other half decent player will probably take the money away from that particular fish. But then I take money from other fish that have sucked out on other decent players. Together we win!

In online play its hard to someone chat.. are alwayes 'ty' and 'nh' only
Sad because i like to talk, alot of trash talk, but i talk.
