Post subject: How should I calculate my rate of profit / hand?

Is there a common method to calculate a rate of profit/hand relative to the big blind or buyin of a table?
I would like to calculate my profit rate for both real cash games and play money games and compare my profit rate for different stakes of tables to determine which stakes are currently my optimum.

Just take your total profit and divide by the number of hands youve played. If you keep records then it should be pretty easy.
Also poker tracker already shows BB/100 which is Big Bets every 100 hands. A big bet is 2 big blinds so to convert that into bb/hand then multiply by 2 and divide by 100.
The standard winrate unit is BB/100 though.

...OK if I understood correctly the standard format is relative to how many "Big Bets" you win per 100 hands.
BB = Big Bet
bb = big blind
BB =2 bb
I won 13500 play chips in the last 100 hands I played then my last session at a table where the blinds were 100/200.
So my win rate there was
13500 / 2 x 200 = 33.75 BB/100
...right?
Mucknut.
13,500 chips per 100 hands / (2 x 200 bb) = about 34BB/100

Your calculations were correct but you need to play way more hands before you can realistically calculate your win rate. You need to play at least 10k - 15k hands to even get an idea if you're winning.

Not at play money you dont. How sure you are of winning (confidence intervals and the like) is a function of varience. Varience is a function of winrate. Winrate at play money tables is huge so it should only be like... 4K hands or something before you are "sure" you are beating the game. Itll still be lots of hands before you get a true idea of your winrate though.

Yeah baby! ... Thanks Pelion.
I'm playing play money tables to practice "discipline" maintainin my TAG game without letting it LAG. My confidence grows as I keep tight in the places where I would prefer to gamble and stay loose in the places where I read that the other players are not beating me.
... In my previous reply I deleted a humorous section about how stupidly short the sample of hands was, I understand I need to look at a large sample.

Play money tables are loose to the point of raising with 72o. That said, the only real "discipline" you can develop there is learning to press the fold button. Although... something could really be said for that.

In my opinion I have found some very observant players on FullTilt's play money ring games at both medium and low stakes tables ... but I digress, this thread is about what do people consider a decent winrate.

mucknut, there are a few threads on this topic that have been covered in depth - it's worth using the search function (near to top of this page) and seeing if you can find any.
Obviously, though, winrates differ at different levels - a good player will win far more relative to the blinds at $10NL than a good player will at $1000NL.
At 10NL, aim for 10PTBB/100. At 25NL, aim for 7ptbb/100. At 50NL, aim for 5ptbb/100. But always, bear in mind that ANY positive winrate means you are a well above average player - less than 40% of poker players can count themselves as winner because of rake.
