it depends if theres any flush draws, straight draws etc on the board.

the worst thing to do in poker is give opponents free cards that will beat you.

For me, it really depends on if I've got the pocket pair or if the board paired. If I have a pocket pair I'm not really afraid of anything and I will usually bet if I'm first to act. If I'm bet into I'll probably just flat-call, a raise would probably say [B]big[B/] hand and I won't get paid off.
It's completely situational however, if there is a possible 4-to-a-flush or 4-to-a-straight I will raise. I don't wish to give anyone the right odds to hit a better hand.
If the board pairs, there is always a chance of a full house. Especially if somebody could be playing a pocket pair. It's up to you to read your opponents hand and decide if your trips are good; and bet/raise/check/fold accordingly
