Hey,
I am new to poker and i wanna say hi to u all.
Ive been started to play since 1 month ago,and i am really enjoying every minute of it.
Ive been playing some small poker tournaments(online) and i always ended high, and won quiete alot since im only just a beginner, but reading this forum and visiting other poker sites or even watching some poker videos already made me play alot better but im far away from a good poker player.
Now i was wondering, how long does it take to get good at texas hold em NL,and are u guys still enjoying the game as much as u started to play?
For me i think this is one of those games u never get tired of.And i hope i will be having fun with this for a long time.
Anyway cu guys,and have fun

Welcome!
I don't know how long it takes to get good at this game, but I can tell you this - if you read up on the posts here, the strategy guides, post your questions and some hand histories, and actually apply some of this stuff, you will at least be a BETTER player.
The game only gets better as you gain deeper levels of understanding.
Plus, no hand is ever the same - different players, positions, hands, the chips going click click click click - its a great game.
Poker is the great equalizer. Its a game (sport) that every person has the opportunity to make it. You dont need to be a physical specimen, have access to expensive equipment, coaches, training. The 60 yr old retiree can wipe up the floor with that punk kid - lol. The kid in the wheelchair can whoop the ex-NFL player. What a game!

Nearly choked on my coffee....
The live games I play have real deep mix of characters.
Two weeks ago, us punks got our asses kicked by someone's grandma, who went on to win the tournament.
We also play with a young guy (25?) that is wheelchair bound with Muscular Dystrophy. It's a sad story really, but you can't help but smile when you try to get a body language tell off this guy. His disadvantage gives him a huge advantage in Poker, because he is next to impossible to read.
What a game indeed!

Welcome to FTR! I've been playing poker since elementary school, we would play after Halloween and our stakes would be our candy.
Of course, that doesn't really count cuz Texas Holdem is a pretty deep game and you only really start when you get serious about it. For me, that was in early/middle of 2003. I was a winning player by late 2003 , but I was putting in my time - all nighters multi-tabling, reading books during the day, etc. I still dig it, although I've given up the crazy all night sessions, I'm more controlled now, playing 2-3 hour sessions here and there.

HA HA! Dude, you got your @ss kicked by a GRANDMA?!
See what I mean?
Thats a classic.
But i do believe that this is why the game of poker grows in popularity and will continue to grow in popularity. There is no reason for anyone to be disincluded from playing this game against anyone else and holding their own.

Yes, she beat 13 players. Took $20 off of me, and $40 from some others. Mind you, she is no innocent grandma. She has been playing at Casino Rama and Great Blue Heron (Ontario Casinos) for years. Just try having her sit to your left all night long. arrrgg.

Dis,
NL holdem is a game you can get "money making" good at in very short order. However, it's also a game where - if you aren't careful - your best days end up behind you, not in front of you. Alot of times people get good results early with below average to poor play, and then spend alot of years chasing the results they had before without improving their game. So, enjoy. It isn't a particularly hard game if you love learning and playing it - mainly learning. And you have the right mentality to get better over time and not become one of these perma-tilt players who can't play but get paid off just often enough from bad play to think they're good.
Here's a short list of areas to watch and improve:
1. Your game - based on type of play (limit or NL, MTT, SnG, Ring), stakes, sites, competition, etc. They all make a difference.
2. Your Thinking - how you handle wins, losses, money, pressure, bankroll management, yourself, your ego, etc.
3. Improving your results for your game - this means looking at different sites, etc. Some will be better for your game than others. Play players you can beat. The idea that "I want to play the best players so I can improve faster" is not something I agree with. You can improve faster by seeing (and making money off) bad play (in my opinion) than by getting your ass kicked by pro's and then going "what happened?" Did you learn something? Yea! Change sites! lol
You have a leg up on your european counterparts by being here and reading up. Remember my advice to play players you can beat? I love playing NL ring with europeans. I don't know why most of them play the way they do, but please God don't let them stop!
Enjoy and welcome to FTR.
