i checked out your list of vids.
Tempting.
But i like the idea of never reading a poker book or joining a training site (hence not taking advantage of an fpp stox/CR membership that uses about a week of fpps).

But the vids by gametight and renton, spenda's vids, and the various 100nl+ vids sound interesting

Hey guys,

I've been negotiating with our rake-back provider, and I'm excited to announce the results: Starting in June, Grinderschool will offer free memberships to players who earn enough rake over the course of the prior month. Play can be on any site (or combination of sites) that earns you rake-back from Grinderschool. Further, you will still get industry-standard rates for rake-back.

For more details, see our free membership page, or ask questions here.

Regards,
- Jeffrey "JGB146" Blake, Grinderschool Admin

Hi guys,

We're pleased to announce two new instructors to the Grinderschool lineup. Both are joining to add even more bang to the GS cash game offerings.

Jeff "Lengthy" Williams joins from 2+2 to focus primarily on 6-max. Lengthy has killed the game up to $200nl 6max. He is already bringing great things to the site through detailed theory analysis.

José "KillsAids" joins from FTR! He will be focusing primarily on Full Ring. With over 250k hands of solid, winning play up to $400nl, KA brings a lot of experience to the game. Plus he's a homegrown hero - starting off as a GS member just over a year ago!

With these instructors in place, CodeRed will be able to share the responsibility of running the Full Ring section of the site. That frees him up to start adding content for the game that has become his focus: Heads-up play. This means that by late June we will regularly be featuring HU content, with new HU videos at least every other week!

Final note: I got a few people pumped up about the podcast, and then technical issues created some delays. Those are finally getting worked out, and the GS podcasts will be out very soon - within the next week.

Cheers!

I bought the 3 month deal a few days ago and thought I would give my thoughts thus far...I emailed JGB a few questions and he was VERY quick to respond to me.

Coaching
First off, I just want to say that the coaches offer great $ to time ratio for anyone looking to better their game. They have made it affordable for micro players which is amazing as a lot of other coaches out there charge more than what my current br is at. The coaches at GS also know what they are talking about. If anyone is contemplating getting into this. Do some homework on the players offering their services and I know when I'm ready this is the site I am headed to.

Video Content
The list is smaller than some of the other sites but its packed with stuff geared towards people like me who are trying to adapt concepts and apply them in real world scenarios. I have seen other videos from various other sites but actually seeing someone play 10NL and seriously discuss low limit issues has been invaluable thus far. I am focusing on mostly ring games right now and just the video section was worth the $35 for me.

Articles and Forums
I put these two together as they are the most lacking on the site. Don't let this fool you however. You can post any question you have and for sure will get quality responses. You do on FTR as well but this is my GS review and was worth noting. There is also tons of info in the forums that cover things that aren't articles already.

Final Thoughts
GS also offer content on rake back, what sites to play, and a prop program that seems pretty cool. All in all I am very happy with my purchase and recommend it to anyone who is looking to better their game (esp micro players like myself). This site seems geared at lower limit players which is great because you can watch a video and then hit the tables applying what you just learned.

Is the information specific to areas you might have had issues with in the past ?

I will drop a quick note in here... though no longer a member (I'll explain that in a bit) I found great improvement working on GrinderSchool.com. I had good success with the lessons learned in the videos and a couple of personal coaching sessions.

Why am I not on there any longer? Well, I found online poker too challenging to keep up with due to stresses in my life from other directions, so I had to drop my playing time. I went from around 5,000 hands a month down to about 500 now. I am only playing very casually, but I will state that even as a casual player, the lessons learned on GS help me substantially.

Come winter, when I think my playing time will increase, I'll be back on GS.com. I'd recommend it to anyone.

In my opinion, we have great content in both sections. To get the most of them, you should definitely get a full subscription, as a lot of the tourney content doesn't fall under the subscription covered by a micro stakes subscription.

For SNGs, we have on the order of 60 videos. I've done over 40 SNG videos myself. CodeRed (ElipsesJeff from FTR) has done a dozen or so, and Glitlr (#1 on Sharkscope for low stakes SNGs) has done about a dozen as well.

For MTTs, we have about 80 videos. Chardrian has done 15 videos, AAPoker has done 30+, Fjuanl has done 15, and CodeRed and I have each done a handful.

Every time I check this thread or any reviews I look for bad reviews for issues to address. From what I've read everywhere though people are loving the site which is excellent news but criticism is something we can build on.

Since our forum is private it is entirely spam free and everyone feels comfortable to post in any thread without feeling like 'its above them.' I wish Grinderschool was around when I first started with poker because the value is insane compared to the other sites.

I can certainly see the benefits of having a private forum, most of which your quote points out. However, how does having a private forum not reduce the level of discussion that does, or could, occur? I understand most coaches probably post often, as well all the members. But the members (no offense) are obviously there to learn and are unsure of their actions, and this leaves only x number of coaches to cover all the questions. And since it's a training site geared towards microstakes, I would assume you don't have midstakes players on there helping out the microstakes players in the forums as occurs in public forums.

Maybe I'm just wondering how it all works, or I'm bitter because I was going to go check out the forums a little while back, but couldn't .

Potentially the level of discussion would plateau at a higher level if no one from the outside is brought in, if you don't take into account that all instructors are active participants either here or 2p2 and receive help to improve their own game. The instructors then funnel that help on down the food chain. Also, we are always on the lookout for qualified and motivated instructors who are going to put out the best content.

Like all forums, we have a varying set of skill from all our subscribers. Those that have been around for a long time are able to answer some of the more mundane/obvious questions and JGB and I make it a point to read every thread and if we see an incorrect response we correct it. I could see this becoming a problem once we reach a certain height in membership but we are no where near that right now. When that does happen though we will take the required actions to make sure we can handle the increase in traffic

In terms of midstakes players helping microstakes I'm unsure what you mean. We're there to make sure our players can get to 50 NL and higher and grind out a nice profit in doing so. We have a few 100-400 NL videos on there but that takes away from the 10-25 NL videos that we release. Thus, we give the option to our members to see the 'higher level' thinking that should be expected at the higher-than-micro stakes, ask questions to us, then get back to building their bankrolls and moving up the poker ladder.

If there are any 200 NL+ regs who want free access in exchange of posting advice we can talk terms on that but there aren't many situations at 50 NL and below that Spenda, myself, JGB or Sugar Nut can't handle.

@mrhappy: I'm not taking your post seriously That said, it is hard to argue our site as 'expensive' on any sorts of comparison. We really feel its as 'free' as possible given the amount of effort JGB, Becky and I put into making it as quality a training site as we know how.

Will probably be getting myself a 1 month full subscription to start off in July. Have recently moved up to 25NL and would like to see if i could use the site to help me crush 25NL and 50NL.

Just one question. What are the average size of the vids ? Here in South Africa they rape us for bandwidth so i gotta consider this also when buying a subscription.

It depends a bit on which file format you are getting. The FLV (flash) files are routinely larger than the WMV files. I would estimate the average WMV to be about 100MB.

1. Evilpopcorn....I got nearly all of the microstakes videos on a 4GB jump drive. I probably wont be able to fit all of them but a helluva lot of them are on there.

2. I made more money at NLHE ring games after watching ONE of Spenda's videos...maybe it just finally sunk in...whatever...i doubled my money at G2G poker. (not a lot of money but now its (2 x not a lot of money))

Hi guys,

I wanted to post an update, primarily about our new Grinderschool Poker Podcasts. These are released once a week and are free for anyone (you don't even have to join the forum). To access them, just click the Podcasts link in the upper right section of the navbar.

So far, we have released four episodes. We rotate hosting responsibilities between Sugar Nut, CodeRed, and me. Each of us does things a little bit differently, but we all aim to make sure that there's a fair amount of strategy in each episode. We also include a segment of interviews. Eventually, we'll get some famed poker players on there, but for now we are going through and talking with each member of our team to discuss individual experiences and background.

So far those interviews consisted of:
1) Sugar Nut interviewing me about how GS came about and what I intended to (but didn't quite) do at the WSOP this year
2) Me interviewing Matt "Glitlr" Meo about how he built his way up from play money games to become the #1 shark-scope ranked SNG player at his stakes
3) CodeRed interviewing Spenda about his background and lifestyle as a pro
4) Sugar Nut interviewing Andrew "Shrewdabom86" Morgasen about what it took to master PLO8, and what it was like living down the hall from Hevad Kahn while learning to massively multi-table SNGs.

Now that the podcasts are rolling along, I'll get started on some of the other plans we have. Will return to update once some of those are completed.

Cheers!

I was excited about Spenda's "How to Master 6-max" when we started it off a couple of months ago. Today we released part 7 of the 8 part series - the final lecture component (part 8 will be a live-play video demonstrating these concepts). I've been thrilled with how the series turned out, and I think that most of our members have been as well.

We are going to be taking that format and expanding it. We have already started work on a series on "How to Master Full Ring" by CodeRed, as well as "How to Master Limit" by Asdpikas and a short "How to Master DoN SNGs" by Moculon. Eventually we will also move to include a "How to Master MTTs" and even some other formats. Onward and upward!

Cheers,

regarding coaching, does it involve the coach skyping and railing the player. If so is it a) possible and b) ok with you guys, for the whole session to be recorded by the player onto a video file for later reference?

also, $50/hr seems very reasonable to me

I listened to 1/2 spenda's podcast last night, and I've got to give you and code-red props spenda. That was a great interview, and even managed to inspire me to play afterwards, with an eye towards identifying who I could 3-bet light, and why.

Almost worth throwing 15 bucks at the site again to see if I can't find more gems like that.

Site is full of gems! I just signed up for my second 3-month membership about a month ago. I haven't plowed through the videos like i first anticipated, plus they keep adding new ones.

Even though I focus on primarily tournaments, I think that some of the general concepts I've learned from cash videos, SNG videos, and the lectures are applicable to various situations. Even if the concepts aren't directly applicable, they're helping me to be a more thinking player. So GS is def worth the bucks in my opinion if you're taking the game serious and trying to improve.

Now with podcasts and the upcoming How to Master MTT series of videos, I'll probably end up signing up a couple more times.

Anyone who has checked out our videos list for the last week will notice that there's a gap. That is, that no videos were released for about a week. There's a reason for that (and our members were already made aware of the situation by email, forum posts at GS, Facebook announcement, and Twitter messages):

The company that hosts Grinderschool recently decided that we were one of their more demanding sites and thus that they needed to transfer our site onto a beefier server, with more power and more space. The site itself transferred flawlessly, within minutes. However, something went wrong with transferring the video files (and I've contacted them half a dozen times since).

Basically, the videos were being moved, but extremely slowly. What that meant was that until the process was complete, we wouldn't know what parts of our video library were and were not available for our members. There was also a chance that adding new content could cause problems in the transition.

We basically had to put the video part of the site on hold. But I didn't feel right about leaving our members hanging because of a screw-up with out host, so we also stopped charging. That is, for the time that we haven't been able to release new content and be sure the old content was available, all existing members got a free extension. So basically, that's an extra week. And the site wasn't completely down - we've still be answering questions on the forums and more and more of the videos have become available (by tonight, all should be available again).

So, if anyone has looked at the site recently (or does so soon from now), rest-assured that no one was charged for time that we weren't able to provide a top-notch experience. And the same practice will be our modus operandi if we encounter issues in the future (though we also might have to move to a new host!).

Hi, just registered to the site for a months sub. At the moment im only playing full ring games, but your site offers alot of 6 max (especially bigspenda's videos which i was interested in watching).
Would there be much difference in the styles of play?

Would it benefit me as much watching 6 max, or should i just watch full ring videos?

It looks like the all the vids are back up now. Keep up the good work JGB. Now you just need to get Jyms back and all will be well.

I definitely think that Spenda's How to Master 6-max series will have a lot of concepts that are applicable in both areas. There will be some adjustments to make, but that series is full of great material.

I think you'd be best served by getting a feel for FR through the 70+ FR-specific videos, and then start mixing in 6max videos, starting with the series mentioned above. That way, you'll have a very solid foundation in FR before you have to figure out what to use and what to lose from the stuff you see in the more aggro 6-max vids.

Thanks and welcome to the site!

Hi guys,

It's been a while since I made an update about GS. Lots of stuff has happened in the interim. Glitlr, our lead SNG instructor, found himself faced with some incredible opportunities which are ultimately pulling him away from the site. As is, we have 14 videos from him, and a 15th on the way. That's certainly enough to improve many player's SNG games by a land slide (not to mention the ~50+ SNG vids that CodeRed and I have put out previously).

To make up for the loss of Glitlr, we have found a full-blown team of SNG instructors. Our new lead instructor will be Reasons14. He will cover basic 9-man turbo games, but will also provide a unique and highly skilled view on multitable SNGs. Providing support for him will be a number of experienced FTR players: TLR will cover higher-stakes turbo SNGs and some non-hold'em cash games, GatorJH will cover non-turbo games, and Nakamura will cover low-stakes turbos and DoNs.

Similarly, we have a few new cash game instructors. FTR's Da Goat joins us to cover 6max cash, and former GS members DWBH and Colossos159 will also be covering the 6max cash games.

As of September 1, we're up to 13 podcast episodes (free for all from podcasts.grinderschool.com ), and we're still working through interviewing all of the GS coaches! We've got a number of things lined up for the show once we finish delving into the background of our instructors.

Perhaps the biggest news is that I'm taking a hiatus from my day job, to focus on GS and to take some grad-school classes. That should mean that you will see a lot of new and exciting things coming out of GS in the next few months!

Cheers,

Seems like Grinderschool seems to have a lot of turnover.

I can't decide if it's good because you have fresh iterations and explanations on the same old ideas

or

if it's bad, because the lack of continuity and perhaps lost a few of your better video producers to circumstances beyond the sites controll.
The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?

This is a valid point. Honestly, I think there is some good and some bad to be found from it. But I would like to make a couple of corrections, if I may:

Our turnover isn't really that high. We have a lot of instructors who end up taking time away from doing videos, but there are a variety of reasons for that - most still are actively involved with the site, either through the forums, through the Skype chatroom, or through private coaching. I don't think it is unusual for coaching to end up taking up enough time that it keeps some of our staff from having time to make videos.

That said, the benefits that new instructors bring are very real. First off, having someone else come in and explain things in a new way can help people get over the hump in learning key concepts that have a big impact on their game. Different people like different things, so where you might pick up on something Spenda says, I might need DWBH to explain it in his way before I grasp it fully.

Also, it's not just a matter of explaining similar things in new ways. Every instructor has his own individual strengths, and his own background to draw from. We've had a number of requests to cover 45-man SNGs. As great an asset as Glitlr was to the site, that was never going to be something he could do. So now we have a team that can cover the same material Glitlr covered, but also cover other areas, providing more complete training for our members.

I'm also not sure that continuity is a big issue. After the first 10-15 minutes of a new instructor's video (or, in extreme cases after the first video or two), everyone is comfortable and learning again - often all the better for it (for many of the reasons above).

Just my take,

GS is <200nl. There's going to be turnover. Hell there's just as much turnover at micro stakes NL.

If you are subscriber, check out the video where Spenda plays every hand for an hour @ 25nl. The chat wars are worth the price of admission.

As announced on the episode #15 podcast that came out this week, we have another new face. Chris "Sykedupp" Conley joins us to beef up our MTT team. Chris might be a familiar face to some of you from around here, and/or from PTP.

And before anyone asks, his joining the team isn't evidence of any turnover. Fjuanl is still going to be just as active as he has been. It's just a matter of having more stuff come out.

Also, since AAPoker won Sunday Majors in back to back weeks at the beginning of the month (first the UB $200k and then the FT $750k), it looks like we will be getting a replayer-based video of his $99k score in the $750k. I'll update here when that starts coming out.

Sykedupp is really good. He doesn't know it, but he really helped me fundamentally when I was transitioning from cash to MTTs.

Hi
I would like to try subsribing however because of where i live (ascension island) i can not afford to watch videos at home. The download cost is incredible $1 per MB. My only option would be to download the video at work put it on a USB drive then take it home to watch.

Is this allowed ? I have tried to do it with the sample videos but they wont let me down load them.

Hi hopeful,

Yes, this is allowed for members who have a subscription. Subscribers get access to streaming and downloadable versions of every video, and each of those are available in WMV and FLV format (the later to improve compatibility with Linux and Mac computers). Also, our videos do not have any kind of DRM, so moving them from one of your computers to another in the manner you describe will not be difficult at all.

I signed up for 3 months. Like you said the videos download fine.

Not sure how to make the most of the sites content. At the moment seem to be randomley choosing things.

I will watch a few videos, read the forums and articles then try to come up with some sort of plan.

Since your signature references MTTs and SNGs, obviously that's a good area to focus on. More specifically, I think pouring over the 15 videos we have from Glitlr could be very helpful for your SNG game.

By the time you're halfway through your subscription, Fjuanl should be ready to start releasing his How To Master MTTs series, which should clearly be a big help to that side of your game.

Beyond that, I suggest clicking MTT or SNG in the tag cloud on the video listing page, and then skimming the remaining topics to see if there is anything listed that sounds especially relevant to your game.

Also, be sure to post to our SNG forum with any difficult decisions or spots where you aren't sure what the right play was. Reasons14, myself, and other SNG coaches will be quick to give you our expert opinions.
