Hey everyone! My name is Jerry and I'm new to poker. I have been playing small games with my friends for about 5 months now. The set-up is probably like a sit and go tournament, where there 5-7 of us all put in 5-10 dollars and winner takes all. I, personally, have only won a total of 2 times. We play once a week, so I am a little negative in my winnnings. I have read everywhere that in the beginning that I will lose more money than win, but I'm looking to improve so that it makes the game that much more fun and i get a profit out of it. So the question is, can anyone offer up any good books that I should check out of my local library or any good websites that I should read besides this one. Thanks alot!

It depends somewhat on whether you play NL or Limit. I am reading "Small Stakes Hold'em" by Miller, Sklansky, and Malmuth right now, and it's pretty straightforward and helpful. However, if you play NL, you'll want to read a book pertaining specifically to that game. Check out the book reviews on this site. They should help you. Either way, this forum will help you out a lot more once you read up on the game and gain some understanding of the advanced strategies. It's by far the best website I have come across yet.

twoplustwo.com has good info, pms is contagious over there though. for odds info, pokertips.org has a free calculator that you can figure out the odds of 2-9 hands winning at any point during a hand.
this site is really the best place though for overall information. the SNG section has everything you need to know about winning games like this, although a lot depends on the structure you guys use: if the games are setup poorly, no advice can make you a winner.
i betcha that i got something you ain't got, that's called courage, it don't come from no liquor bottle, it ain't scotch

You can find a lot info here at FTR. I learned a lot from here.

But I think what improved my game more is reading Harrington on Holdem. He explan a lot a the game angle and with a lot of example and exercies. that make it very easy to understand the concept.

Then, you need the discipline, and you can find that in any book.

SO HARRINGTON ON HOLDEM

Well he is obviously already on FTR and wanted some information about other resources. We're all understandably biased towards FTR and one reason is because we give good, honest advice while at the same time being respectful. 2+2 has a wealth of information, some of which you won't find on here. But, like was mentioned already, you also sometimes have to deal with poor attitudes.

I'd recommend Harrington on Hold'em for NL tourney play. However, to get the most of the two books (Vol I and II) you need a basic solid knowledge of the game IMHO. Get that knowledge here, it won't take long!

I agree. I haven't found any site yet to match FTR. It RULEZ! :P

As for books, I liked both of Harrington's books a lot. They have hand examples that really drove home the point of the chapters for me.

I also liked Slanksy's two books, Small Stakes Hold'em and Hold'em for Advanced Players.

Brunson's book, Super System, while good, went over many types of poker, and since I was only interested in Hold'Em, wasn't on my favorites list, but it can get you a good solid base for hold'em and poker in general.

TLR is an unknown quantity at this point
Welcome to the Forum SmallCheezFry

First thing to do I think is go to http://www.homepokertourney.com/ and make sure your tournament structure is aligned with it.

Second thing is go the the FTR home page and read the articles about pot odds and starting hand selection

Third thing is to go the SNG forum and read the stickies there

This will give you the quick basic, then I would pick up one of the mentioned books and study it

After you get the basics, read the Theory of Poker by David Skalansky. It will get you out of memorizing how to play and advancing to Why you play the way you do.
