I'm really having problems identifying when is and isn't the right time to push when I begin to get short stacked and the bubble arises. If someone could give some good pointers for this area of short stack tourny play, it would really be appreciated.

If the table is tight this is an insta push from the co.

how does one go about protecting himself from this type of scenario where you're praying for a miracle once the chips go in...?

I don't think it's a good push here since your stack was 10* the big blind. You could just have called the big blind to see the flop or fold to any big raise. I would push with this hand if my stack is below 8 * the big blind. If you had waited for 1 or 2 more rounds, you would probably have got a better hand to push all in.

M of < 5 and you have 2 broadways opening in the CO... seems like a pretty standard push. Wrong forum btw, but no big deal.

seems like an easy push for me.
Sometimes you might even fold out KQ .... although probably not in a freeroll
