I am wondering how to gauge my success in playing based on percentages that are shown in the Stats section on Pokerstars. I play .05/.10 full ring tables, usually 2 tables at once.

I watch my flop % and try to keep that around 30% overall and close to 20% for non-blind hands. I get sloppy if I play too many hands. But I also can easily calculate the following percentages, and wonder if you have any personal benchmarks you use that are useful in tracking during a session:

1. Pots won/hands dealt
2. Pots won/flops seen
3. Percentage of showdowns won
4. Others?

I'm still a fairly new player struggling to improve. Hope some of these stats can help me if I know how to interpret them. Thanks for any advice.

Go here: http://www.pokersourceonline.com/ and sign up for one of the offers to get pokertracker free. The stats built in to any poker room software are not going to come close to what this offers. If you would like to get serious about the game, this is something that will help you an incredible amount.

You can get free offers for PokerOffice from their website. It comes with a built-in HUD, which is extra $$ for PT.

The numbers you are asking about aren't near as important as net winnings. If you have a strategy for winning play that means you play 80% of non-blind hands and 100% blind hands, it's better than a non-winning stratgey where you tighten up like a horses ass and play 13% of non-blind hands and 22% of blind hands.

Get PokerTracker AND PokerOffice. Then determine which one you like best (or like me, you like a bit from both). In the meantime focus on learning more about being a better and winning player.
I'd like to meet Jesus. Not because people claim he was the son of god, but because he could turn water into wine. A man like that is good to know, because you never know when you'll need a bottle of wine or an extra nail.

But since its almost impossible to have a winning strategy with 80% VPIP, and it is possible to have a winning strategy with 13% VPIP it is certainly worth watching these stats. I agree that certain stats should be guidelines rather than targets. i.e. You can (and should) deviate from them when you have a good reason to. However it is still useful to have somewhere to start from. Winrates will not find leaks for you. If you are playing a +5BB/100 game when you could be at +7BB/100 then you have plenty of leaks to find and it is often unusual stats that will help you find them
gabe: Ive dropped almost 100k in the past 35 days.

I agree with the guys suggesting a tracker, it's a very valuable thing to have. Both Poker Office and Poker Tracker are good softwares, but I personally prefer Poker Office.

It can be pretty misleading to draw any conclusions after just one session, it's much better to have a large sample size and go from there.
