i am personally shocked at the drop off in these tourneys. c'mon guys. we can get more than 20 to show up, right?
how many members/active posters do we have here at FTR? 20 players does not do justice for the numbers of us that run our mouths in the threads.
surely, we can get this number up higher. say 40? its not too late to jump in and participate.
wednesdays at 9ET and sundays at 3ET. its a whopping $5!! and there are often cash games on side tables, too, for you ring players. remember, this week those of us on daylight savings in the US lose an hour......for those of you who play Sunday afternoons.
i'm throwing the proverbial GUANTLET down. how many of you will pick it up?

yeah, i'm not after you guys. i know you guys play.
i'm after the regs in here that arent playing. time commitments is one thing, and i'm not looking for excuses.
i just think we can do much better than 20 per.

oh, and btw, i'm not perfect, either. i usually play on wednesdays, but this one was halloween and i had trick-or-treating duty with the kiddies.
sadly, i was back in plenty of time, and logged on to play ring for 3 hours or so. so, thats not even a legit excuse...it just sidetracked me off of thinking it was wednesday. i got up thursday and went....

I'd love to participate, but......
1. My schedule is all crazy and conflicts with game times.
2. My game is still in the "OMG u r such a f*kin donk" phase of development.

I know it is, I'm just saying that could explain the low attendance. The vets may get bored of horsing around at a 5 + .50 tourney and the noobs may be put off by the careless attitudes and seemingly rude remarks.

see, ive never experienced that. i played last season, for the first time, and was intimidated big time. i read all the posts, and think, "theres no way i can compete with these guys. they will laugh me off the tables."
but, everyone has been nice...not maybe to each other...but to me. they dont know me. they have no reason to joke with me, unless i start running my mouth.
and, the reason for the $5 amount IS for the newer players. what a better way to sharpen your game? you get to play against the guys that post here a lot and compare your game. and, if you want, you could take some HHs from the tourney and post them while asking the others that were at the table what they were thinking.
personally, i think its an opportunity to foster comradarie (sp?), laugh a little, and just have a good time. sure, someone used to playing a $100 MTT isnt going to take the $5 entry fee seriously, but he's there for bragging rights. and, if side games get started, they get started for cheap, too, usually buying into a $5 table for $10. you cant tell me that some of those guys arent hyper-competitive regardless of the buy-in. i know i am.
and, if you think they are just playing overly aggressive, you shouldnt have any trouble beating them with a standard game, right? let them jerk around all they want, and make it easier on you to climb the standings.
just my .02. i think its one of the best things going here at FTR, personally.

Def need more players. That said, since the clocks went back it's now at 2am Weds not 3am so I probs wont be back. And I can't play today. But God the GAUNTLET is so fun, and you could post some hands and get some feedback on how you played and maybe IMPROVE!

The concept is great but I don't see the point in paying to get your arse kicked. And if, as you say, there is overtyly reckless play then that defeats the whole incentive as far as I am concerned.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I am not sure what I could sharpen my game with. If I am (supposedly) too green to appreciate the moves Negreanu is making on WPT then the same will apply here.
The main thing for me - and one I suspect would make a big difference - is that there needs to be 2 gauntlets: 1 for beginners and one for all and sundry. This way, the experienced guys don't get bored and beginners won't necessarily feel like they're dead men walking.
Just a thought.
And the great thing is that either tourney can be used for teaching purposes in the video section. One of the great players can commentate and point out rookie mistakes and good play. See, it's one thing having a pro tell us what he's going to do but the learnings may be deeper and more substantial if someone does what he advises AGAINST - and then seeing the consequences play out exactly as forewarned against.
t's Aversion Therapy in a way. Tell me to slow down when driving in bad weather a gazillion times and - "meh!" - but show me some car torn into 3, with the driver having his legs amputated at the scene and I am uber careful.
Also, dunno about anyone else, but as I am not in our former colony, the time needs to be somewhat friendly and not 4am in the morning GMT.

Last time I played the Gauntlet it was just to make fun of people.
I got bored after ~3 minutes and open pushed with 93o or something similar and sucked out on a short stack's AK.
I was pissed that I was still in, so I just sat out and left PokerStars.

thunder,
you sound intimidated without ever playing a hand...all full of assumptions. you shouldnt be. if you play abc, let the crazies/nonserious spend their way right out.
now, taking the batters box against randy johnson, with my skill level, would be intimidating. poker for $5 is not, so long as you have the bankroll.
thats why i started this thread. i'm trying to debunk all those ASSUMPTIONS by people who havent even tried.

where you been, anyway? i havent noticed you at the same table as me lately. plus, i think you are up there in the standings...am i right?
if so, for a guy that was initially "intimidated," that oughta be some solid testimony that EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY.

When I first joined FTR, I was playing $5.50 SnGs trying to build a BR, and the buyin for the Gauntlet was $11. I was like, OMG WTF SO EXPENSIVE but I really loved the community, so I played anyway. I'm really glad I did because not only did I actually win one and make enough money to pay for my entire season, I got to know a lot of the regs on FTR by playing. The table chat is fun, and talking about the tournament afterwards is fun. The Gauntlet is one of the major ways I got involved in the community here.
I really encourage everyone to play in it. And thanks for making this thread, Chopper

Nah. not intimidated, just as you said, without the BR to throw it away. I'm playing freerolls at the moment due to zero BR.
I still think the points I made are valid and even if there are assumptions, they were placed in the form of a question, allowing corrections.
