I thought of this while playing my cell phone's video poker application. And yes, it has something to do with hold 'em (in that if you think about a specific aspect of hold 'em strategy, you should get the answer easily).
You are at a video poker machine in Las Vegas. It plays 5 card draw, no jokers, and features the standard payout (i.e., the lowest winning hand is a pair of "Jacks or better", with progressively higher payouts for better hands).
The hand you are dealt is A J 8 6 3 rainbow.
What card(s) you you discard and what card(s) do you keep, and why?

I hate vido poker machines!

Rainbow in the sense of no more than 2 cards of any suit.

Off the top of my head I would say just keep the J and discard all the others

This is correct. An ace isn't worth any more than a Jack as far as a pair is concerned-- but, a Jack is a better card to keep because it can form more straights.
The reason why this is relevant to hold 'em is because it's the same principle that makes mid-level suited connectors valuable hands in hold 'em. You can form the maximum number of straights with them.
Spenda's response was good too, of course.
