I personally started to play about six months ago, and I agree with you, when you say that it is better to play freerolls before starting to play with real money. That was also my idea, and I also started to play them. Of course it is difficult to apply most of the strategies you learn from books, online schools and so on, because most of the people play them for fun, but at least you learn to fold good hands, learn to count your Outs, Odds, Pot odds, and other poker concepts, which you need to control before playing for real money.

I forgot to say, that you can find different Online Poker Schools, which will give you the opportunity to play with real money, once you fullfil some minimum requirements. As a general rule, you have to read and learn some basic concepts of poker and then pass a Quiz.

In this way you avoid to make a deposit, or you can reduce the amount of it if you start to play at micro-limit tables.

Freerolls unless you have money to burn. You will learn the basic fundamentals for nothing playing freerolls and until you make the final table about 5 times and you read a lot of strategy tried out a lot of different things and your comfortable making a deposit then go ahead. But i am a firm believer in playing freerolls first.
Stack That Arab Money!!!

I'd suggest using play money and freerolls while you are learning how the game is technically played.

Once you start thinking about strategy you'd be best off depositing and playing 2nl. Just the fact that you are actually thinking and reading FTR already puts you ahead enough to make much better profit than freerolls.
