Been playing poker most of my life but just started playing online in the last 2 monthes. I do well in the sng's but the ring games kill me. I have never seen some of the crazy crap that happens on line. People will go with anything and beat your good hands on the river. It is driving me nuts. I am wondering if the best thing to do is play 3-4 tables and only play top hands which unfortunately makes you look like a rock and then no one will bet with you when you do get in a pot. Oh well just a rant from a frustrated player. I have been reading alot of this forum and have really learned a lot. So thanks to all.

None of my poker playing friends have been able to make money online, either. But I know a secret, and I'll share it with you.
Patience.
If you're playing for the thrill and entertainment value of it, you're going to have a good time losing your money. If you want to win money, you have to get over the thrill and play only good starting hands. Don't worry so much that you won't get any action when you come in for a raise. There's always someone willing to try their luck with a lesser hand. Plus lots of your opponents aren't paying attention, or have just joined the table and haven't seen you folding.
Look for money-saving folds, especially pre-flop. Fold like a champion!
As far as the river-catches, it's just a fact of playing poker. People complain all the time about losing a big hand to some guy who called you down with 94off and caught trip 4s on the river. But this is the sort of play that makes YOU money. You WANT to sit at a table with a guy who will pay to see the river in case that last 4 comes out. People don't complain when this joker folds on the river making you a nice 20x pot. People only complain because they bet, bet, bet and their opponnent calls, calls, raises...and then they blindly go ahead and pay them off!! Train yourself not to pay off this joker.

I had this exact same problem when I first started. I still find SNGs very profitable, but I now play ring games on a regular basis. As for your question, if you are finding it hard to stay out of hands with mediocre cards because everyone else plays them, then multi tabling will help. If it is just holes in your game, you will just lose more money. I like to see cheap flops with pairs and try and catch sets. At low levels people over value TPTK and you can make alot of money. I started playng 10 NL, 3 tables at a time and found it better to just wait for big hands and then get paid off. I would almost never slow play, becasue like you said, these idiots will stay in with anything. Now I play 25 NL and it is about the same, but there are a few players I like to avoid. Just keep good notes, post some of your hand histories in the other forums so the "experts" can analyze your play and find holes. Good luck.

I think the multitable thing is what i need to try because i get bored. i have done it a few times with a little success. I think one of my main problems is I start off playing good double my stack and then loosen up and lose it like an idiot (He's got to be bluffing). Maybe i will open up 3-4 tables and sit like a rock except when in good positions. One other question? How the hell do you get on tables at Party Poker it seemed to be difficult for me to find tables that had open seats where on Poker Stars there are always open tables.

it's a myth that you won't get paid off if you're a rock. People aren't that smart, and they have their own reasons for being in a hand. I've played from $10NL to $1000NL and I've never had a problem getting paid for being a rock. Multi-tabling is a good way to tighten your game if you get bored easily. And don't overvalue YOUR tptk in a loose passive game. You'll get burned. The biggest skill - once you know how to play tight and bet right - is recognizing when you're beat. That's where people lose money. They fall in love with their hand and the 50blinds they've won in the last hour go bye-bye in 1 stupid mistake. Every mistake you eliminate makes you money.

I did a litlle better last night and this morning doing the multi table stuff but on Party Poker I don't like it as well as Poker stars. And I sure don't like the sng at party poker they don't give you enough chips. One bad hand and you are screwed. Trying real hard to be patient but it is so hard when you see people win with rags all the time.

Be a rock and when they call ur AA on turn they had u beat.
Be smart and they will pay ur AA on a J high board with AJ.
Of course u can make money from be a rock. But u wont take any money from thinking players. Poker is not about winning pots only.
Is about maximaise ur wins and minimaise ur loses. Win big pots , lose small pots.
There is not right and wrong , every table is a "unique" table.
You cant play the "same" in every table.

This is the exact problem I've been having. Multitabling 3-4 tables and playing as a rock seems to work for me, but then I also have the problem of loosening up after making a decent profit and putting it all back. I need to start a rock and stay a rock on multi table ring games. It a discipline thing here.

played a good bit last night tripled my buy in pretty quickly but lost 1/3 on a bad beat and a stupid call on the river. So really tightented up and wound up about 2.5 times buyin before i went to bed. One problem i have multi tableing is when you hit good cards on both tables and need time for decision making. That is what caused the stupid call where i lost a huge pot i should never have stayed in. Multitableing is definatly the way to go because you don't get bored that is for sure. The wife and kids are leaveing tomorrow for the weekend so I will probably play a bunch this weekend t\and see if I can't make some money. haha

Played much better this weekend. Was up about $60 at one point then hit a stretch of terrible luck and a maniac joined both tables that i was on.
I made a few bad decisions and tilted a little with this idiot going all-in every other hand and lost what i had won and then some. That was sat.
Sun won 2 sng's and then won back what i had lost on PP ring games and quit a few bucka ahead. I do want to thank all of you who post here as it is a great site for info and has really helped me.

This is simply inexperience. Relax. Don't expect to make tons of $ in a few weeks. Yes, there are people who do it but it is rare. Expect poker to be a long term learning experience and you will be fine. I am coming up on 6 months of experience with online poker and I am starting to feel a good grasp of the game. But I have a long way to go.

Well had a terrible night last night!!! Lost 3 buyins on 25nl Party poker!!! literally could not catch a hand for shit. Had AA one time raised 5xbb pf got called by 4 people! I am think this is going to be great big pot. Flop come 223. HMMM whos got a 2? I bet 3/4 of pot. Get call by 3??? turn is an J. So bet 1/2 pot get called by one. Turn is 8. I check you guessed it this guy stayed in with 23s and hits full house. Had KK one time raise 5xbb get called. rag flop. bet pot called again. rag turn check check back to me. river is rag. bet 1/2 pot get called you guessed it AA. This went on all night. KQs hit my flush got killed by A3s. Just a very bad night. I tryed to get the hand history emailed so I could post some of them but they have not show up yet? Oh well reload and start again!!! I did download Poker Tracker and am trying to figure out how to use all of the info it gives you. Which of the "heads up" programs is better, Pokerace? or the other one Game+ I think it is called.

I cant get Pokerace to work properly (on my fairly up-to-date PC) but gametime+ is great - thoroughly recommend it, even if I can't get it to work properly with Pokerroom's 5max tables.
