I just gotta put in a little two cents here...
Please, please, please, for the sake of making more money, when someone hits a ridiculous draw on you and makes a terrible play or whatever... congratulate them on their great play!! Make them feel like they made the right move, or a simple "nh" or "nice catch" will do. Too often I see players berating other players when they lose to a bad beat. "Why the hell did you call with that garbage??" "You went all in with A5??" Well yes they did, and that's exactly what you want!! Yeah you may have lost this hand, but if they continually make that kind of move you will get them eventually. (Hopefully they don't leave till you get your money back, or someone else takes it first) Bad beats are a part of the game, and shouldn't cause you to get upset. Actually, i look at bad beats in a more positive way, cause I know i played the hand right, I just have a sucker at the table that got lucky. If anything, pump them up, "You're on a roll now!"... Talking a bunch of crap will only make them pay more attention to their game. I'm sure many of the regulars already know this, but I see it so often it's ridiculous.

Well that's one side of the theory.
The other side is that they will cause a good table to go bad and it isnt worth making them think they are doing good.
I prefer to just not say anything in those cases.

Well when you refer to a "good" table, do you mean one with a lot of limpers and calling stations? That's a good table to me... Going "bad" would be everyone tightening up... IMO

I would call a good, solid table one like I was playing on a few nights ago. At this table we had a fairly good amount of raises pre-flop, some good playing going on as far as playing and raising good (group 0-3) hands...that kind of good. I mean we didnt have fools coming in and betting all the way to the river hoping the pair of 4's they made on the flop would hold up when they were holding 49o.
It's fun to play against those people but for someone trying to play low limit conservatively and learn to play the game it's a pain in the ass. This isnt an expert opinion, just the opinion of someone who doesnt plan to stop playing anytime soon and wants quality, stable opponents right now.

i say very little in the chat box. i will occasionally give a simple 'vnh' or 'nh' if the other players hole cards + flop beats me. If it is the turn or river that beats me i say nothing.

I just started reading Theory of Poker, and there's a nice comment in the prologue or first chapter or somesuch. It goes something like this
Good players get bad beats. This is because you're putting money in when you have a stronger hand than the guy who isn't as good a player than you. If you were a perfect player, you'd never deal anyone else a bad beat, 'cause you'd always be leading at the showdown.
nice positive way to think about the bad beats, I think. So yeah, be glad you got a bad beat, it shows you were ahead of him and making the right decisions. Then back in there and take his money.
