Spenda is LEAD moderator. Will641 is co-moderator (helping with general maintenance, as BC gets the most newbie traffic).

Congrats Guys.

Just please, do me one favor. When someone asks a question, please highly discourage zen-master answers. I understand that you want people thinking about the way they play, and why they do the things they do, but when I ask a straightforward question I want a straight forward yes/no answer and here's why/whynot.

The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?

This is kind of an odd thing to ask. People don't answer vague just to mislead people. If you don't like an answer just ask for some more explanation.

BTW, the more thought and effort you put into your questions, the better an answer you'll get.

I don't think it is. The answers given here were designed to make me think.

I STILL have not devined why we bet. These are not why I come to BC, and in fact *this* is why I find myself in BC less and less, and instead going to other members for help instead.

So you expect someone to write a detailed explanation to your question? Search, this topic has been discussed many many times.

The problem is people just asking what's on the top of their head when it's been done and answered before. Don't take this personally, it's a problem on every forum for any topic.

You've been here 3 years and you still don't know why you bet? Isn't that odd?

I'd assume 80% of our members don't know either, so I won't hold it against him.

You've been here 3 years and you still don't know why you bet? Isn't that odd?
Seriously, what does the amount of time I've been here have to do with anything?

I thought, for a very long time that this was a place to dump my hands on the community and have people tell me
"Hey good job Ragnar"
or
"Wow, piss poor job Ragnar"
and that's it.

I read the books by Vorhause, and Brunson, et. al. for my information on why we bet. Do you know what they suggest? "You should bet, because there's an opportunity to pick up the pot". Which is NOT one of the reasons that suggested there, but rather an extension of the primary root : You bet to get a better hand to fold.

I thought to myself, why read the articles written by people who are not Phil Helmuth, Daniel Negranu and Clonie Gowen? I also was a serious limit player for a very long time, and you can be a winning limit player and NEVER know why you bet.

So lets hear it, show of hands who here wants their questions answered with a straightforward answer, and who here wants someone dropping Haiku BS Tao parables as "quasi-answers" to the questions. I'm gonna guess swiggidy, even if I laid even money in which you took Quasi-answers as your horse I'd beat you like you stole something.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I do know one thing. 3 years of me being here and TRYING to get better was far outstripped by getting what is amounting to 3 hours of personal coaching so far.

You do make a hell of a point Swig. I should have done a search. But I didn't and for that I'm sorry that I wasted people's, most specifically your, time...

yeah yeah tl;dr whatev.
The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?

I got a ton out of that thread and thought folks repeatedly posted solid material. I'd be happy if several of those kinds of threads got started in the BC every week. FWIW.

I have to say...

Comparing forum discussions to personal coaching isn't a valid comparison. They are completely different platforms for learning and teaching. OF COURSE you're going to learn more from private, personalized lessons.

Guess I'm in the wrong.

It's not that I thought the thread was bad, in fact I did like the thread. But after a while of what I thought was "hey, we're not going to tell you, instead we're going to let you work your way through it" I felt like a rat in a maze.

It's probably better if I work my own way to the answer than not.. but it's easy to lose interest in a thread, especially when you're frustrated and you just want "wham ban thank you ma'am" and get... not... that.

hell I didn't know till tonight Spenda still wanted my thoughts before moving forward in the thread... which I need to read and get my thoughts in, because I've had this nagging feeling for some time now that it was unresolved and had fallen off the frontpage.

anyway. I'll quit bitching, you guys are right, I'm wrong.
/derail

GL Spenda. You're a class act and I look forward to learning from you here at the BC.

If the grease is that which is on fire it can stick to the body so you can't simply move away from the flame. The principle of napalm really. Rather more vicious than "Oh no, it's a burning house - let's get out of it" or "... let's not go into it".

Spenda.. was reading through some old posts and found this one from you and I thought you were onto something:
http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...do-t48927.html

What are your current thoughts on what the appropriate type of stimulus is?

I'd like to mention that I don't particularly agree with Ragnar's premise in this thread. If I ask a simple question I expect people to tell me - if it's so simple figure it out yourself. If it's not actually that simple I'd hope they tell me how to figure it out on my own and get me kick started on figuring out my own answers. Then they can discuss my method and my answer and that gives me a much better platform for learning.

Btw Ragnar - about betting. I think rather than saying better hands to fold and worse hands to call it should be modified towards being getting hands to fold which are +EV to call and getting hands to call that are -EV to call. That kind of makes the two reasons for betting into one - which is simply that by betting you are giving the opponent the opportunity to make an EV mistake.

Further, I think range manipulation almost comes in before that reason, or as part and parcel of the same reason. When making a bet it's pretty important which part of the villain range will call as that's what you have to contend with on the next street - the folding part is less important. So the range manipulation is almost the basis for the above EV mistake point/reason.

Amusingly this morning I read Professional No-Limit Hold 'em - the beginning chapters on Basics and Fundamentals covers this kind of stuff as well as the whys and how to think about things. I've found it pays to read it carefully even when I think I'm past it.
