hey everyone!
after 'lots of studying, playing with play money, and reading everything on this site, i finally took the plunge on party poker with real money.
the first night was tuesday, which consisted of folding every hand for an hour! not a single playable hand! i never even had two pocket face cards. a loss of $4, mainly due to the blinds, but at least i didn't do anything stupid.
last night, i lost $25 within the first 15 minutes STUPIDLY calling "all ins" two different times when i should have folded. i was not a happy camper!
i collected my thoughts, swore for a bit, and rebought another $25. i caught some decent cards (not great, but playable), bluffed a few small pots, and took down 3 big pots. when all was said and done, i'd won my first $25 buy in back, and made $35 for the 45 minute session. that greatly improved my disposition!
so, thanks for a great site, and also to all of the contributers. i have so much to learn, but this is a good start.
keep up the excellent work!

i know exactly how you feel, its intimidating when you're actually betting 2 dollars preflop for the first time and such, but good start. Be patient and you should win consistently. Might I suggest you try the sit and go tourney's?

thanks raging! it's intimidating but fun. at least i feel like i have a plan - now if i can just manage to stick to it!
regarding sit 'n go's - i played a bunch of play money sit 'n go's and really enjoyed them (and did pretty well). i'll be trying the real money sit 'n go's as well.
it might be a little bit less nerve racking since you just pay your entry, and then can concentrate on playing.
as fun as they are, do you think you can be profitable in the long run with the sit 'n go's?

I think so yes, it's not difficult to at least make it to the money, provided you don't get unlucky and catch a bad beat. I've seen players quit (or get disconnected and not come back) from the beginning and still make it to the money without even playing! Most of my winnings came from the 10+1 sit and gos, and when I won one, I'd take 25 of the 50 and play at a NL table and try to make some more money, I think this strategy works well.

Fishstick,
Hi, this is Tyson, welcome to FTR, I'm glad you like the site, I hope it helps you with your play. It sounds like you're on the right track and off to a much better start than I initially had.
Good luck to you, keep studying and practicing, and if you have any questions or need some help, feel free to post on the board.
Catch ya later.
