1) Someone told me that in a casino you cannot truthfully say what your hand is. They say lying is allowed but not the truth. Is this true?

I can't believe it as even the truth can only be taken with a pinch of salt by the competition. Also, people like Jamie Gold are always truthfully disclosing their hands. And just last week, on the GUKPT, 2 guys were being rather candid about their holdings and weren't penalised.

2) If an opponent raises 20,000 and you say "raise, 50,000" have you raised to 50k or raised on top of the bet of 10k to make it 70k?

3) What merit/strategy is in play when villains check in the dark?

As long as your in the hand, you can say anything you want up until the dealer or floor asks you to remain quiet! And you can not intentionally say you have such a hand that makes the opponent Muck his hand and then you show a losing hand or nothing at all!

Usually it means total from what I've seen, but I'm not exactly sure what the standard is, if there is one. Where I play, the dealers wait and see what the player does after he says that. Some people mean 50k total and some mean 50k on top. Usually if your action immediately follows your words, it won't be a problem.

To avoid the ambiguity, I usually say, "raise to 50k" or I'll just say "raise", get my chips, and say a number (that is the total) as I'm putting them down.
