Full ring or Short handed, I don't think the discussion changes.
Standard situation --- you are in late position with 44 you make it 4bb to go, Button or a blind makes it 12 to 14bb to go. Assume standard 100bb stacks.
"It depends" is always the answer, but you can't call just for set value???
Do you call and hope to outplay someone postflop?
Do you only call if you have a read that the person reraises light?
I have run into several situations where regulars (tags) at the 100nl level are making this call with small pocket pairs. Is this normal/standard??
I guess I am making a bad assumptions -- If I reraise a Tag Regular with a big overpair QQ+ , and the flop comes 6 high, I automatically assume no set possible.
I guess I am rambling, but any comments of this topic would be helpful.

Odds of a set with paired hole cards is 8.51-1
If reraise is 12 then you're calling 8 when he has 88 behind. Odds are there. 11-1
If reraise is to 14 you're calling 10 with 86 behing. Odds are still there (but just slightly). 8.6-1
Add in reads like knowing if he cbets and you shove he'll fold make calling good as well.

It sort of cuts both ways...
The lighter he is 3-betting you, the less likely he will stack off - which actually reduces your implied odds quite a bit - however, it increases your chances of winning a small pot.
to call ONLY FOR SET VALUE I want at least 15-20:1 behind unless I am extremely sure he a) has an overpair b) stacks off with one.
If you are in position, you can out play him on a few flops (now assuming he ever folds a big pair).
But I would never assume that just because the flop is 6-high that some tag can't have a set.

If you are closing the preflop betting and your calling 8-10 vrs his 100bb surely you should call for set value?
Since he has reraised you, he is saying he likes his hand and has significantly increased your implied odds meaning you should not need the 'normal' 15:1 to call it as a lot of things that make up the 15:1 have already been answered.

Unless you are really quite excellent post flop, I don't think 10x implied odds is enough. 8.5x is certainly not enough - since you would have to
a) get all/in 100% of the time you flop a set
and
b) never get out drawn (overpairs have 2 outs, not to mention he could hit a straight or flush.
c) he never flops an overset (which he will 1 in 8.5 as well!)
So, in order to call profitably at ~10x you need to make a little money on average even when you don't hit your set.

if it's marginal (10-1), call
Every time you fold to a 3 bet, god kills your image
