I've read lots of poker books, and I've never seen this covered anywhere. If anyone has any more information on it as a tactic, I'd like to see it, because I'm sure this isn't an original thought or anything.
My last few SNGs (which have been pretty profitable for me) I have adopted this stance: If I'm 1 or two seats from the button in an unraised pot, and I intend to call a bet, I automatically raise.
Naturally, you raise with your big hands, but I don't care if I'm playing AA or a Rippy. If I'm going to play from that spot, I'm going to raise, unless someone in front of me has put a substantial bet in.
I may burn off a few chips here raising wth 67suited, but some big things happen:
1) You thin the field. Sometimes this is good. Sometimes, bad... naturally.
2) You set yourself up for aggressive play later when scare cards are out there and your opponents show weakness.
but the big benefit is
3) Gaining position when the button and/or 1 off fold.
I've found that what I've burned off in bad plays is more than made up for with the information presented to me and the ability to act last in a hand. The more I play, the more important I realize position is. To me, it's worth an extra BB or raise to buy the position for the money it can make or save me on a later round.
Any thoughts?

which books have you read? this occurs countless times in 2+2 books.

I just read about this very subject in Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players. To some degree it was discussed in SSH as well, though they didn't get into the theory as much as just saying "raise with anything playable from late position".
