The bubble in a tournament is the point where play tightens up considerably as everyone is trying to survive to reach the money. Play also slows as hands are dealt "hand for hand" to decide in a MTT who the player knocked out just before the money is. (To prevent arguments of who was busted first if 2 players are all in at the same time on separate tables.) Once the bubble "bursts" and all players are in the money, play becomes super agressive as everyone is trying to amass chips to get to the final table.
The WPT and televised tournaments created another "bubble" of players trying to reach the final 6 which is the only part of the tournament televised. This is commonly referred to as the "TV bubble."

To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.
