hello all,

i've been playing online for a couple of months now, not making much money but not losing much either (well, i did at first, but that's because i was playing like an idiot). in any case, here's my question:

in the last week or so, two different players at two different tables have told me that i would get "better" cards preflop by moving to a different seat at the same table. those statements were reinforced when i saw another two players do that very thing. is it true that there is a "better" side of the table and that i should move if i'm consistently getting junk preflop? and, if that's the case, will that "good" seat shift one to the left if a player leaves the table?

thanks for all of the great advice from this forum. you've all helped so much.

peace,
merton1

Seeing as deals are guaranteed to be random, and the concept of the button makes this theory unfounded. Some people just get lucky. Patience, your time will come.

I have noticed that some seats tend to get hot at times. However, when it's happened to me, the seat where it occured has been different usually. It doesn't mean that one seat is better than another when you play online poker, it just has to do with anomolies in randomized situations.

There is such a thing as a "Hot seat" but if you can find that hot seat, you are just lucky.

It's like slot players looking for the "hot machine". Fact is, there is a machine that will hit the jackpot the next time you pull the arm, and anyone can pull that arm. In the same way, someone, at some table will get rockets, but thinking you can find either seat is almost ridiculous.

Poker is not about getting the best cards, it's about using your cards in the best way.

On the same subject, different note, there is a strategy to picking a good seat at a table, and it has nothing to do with where the good cards will come to. Look at Fnords essay. There is a link to it on the home page. It tells how you can look at a table and see where you will be in the best position at a table. The best position to read what others have and make the best decisions. Don't look for the hot seat, look for this seat.

And one final note. If you are sitting somewhere and you don't like the cards you are getting, leave. You could have stumbled onto a "cold seat" but however you look at it, if you are not happy with your cards, you will not be happy with your play. Find another table and get your compsure back.
I don't know what they have to say
It makes no difference anyway.
Whatever it is...
I'm against it.

Is is a psychological thing. Cards will always run hot, cold or in between no matter where you sit. But if you are sitting for over an hour and getting nothing but garbage, get up and go to another table. You'll feel better.

I was playing in AC a few months ago. Limit $5-10. I ran up a couple hundred bucks in an hour. The next three hours I got nothing but junk and my KK ran into AA. I sat there bitching and moaning and one dude suggested that I move my seat. I got up and just left period. I felt better.
