If you are playing against aggressive players, you should tend to either check or make weak bets with strong hands to give them a chance to either bluff into you or make an overzealous value bet or raise.

If you are playing against a weak-loose or calling station type player, you should tend to do a lot of big betting (overbet the pot) in order to make them think you may be bluffing and induce bad calls. If I flop the nuts, I make check the flop and maybe even the turn to let them make a hand they'll call me with.

With good, tight-aggressive players, you should strive to play your strong hands, depending on the situation, in either an aggressive or deceptive way.

For example, say you raise in MP with AQ, get called by a good tight player in the bb, and the flop is AQ9 with two to a suit. In this case, you're flopped top two pair is a monster, vulnerable only to draws and a set of 9's (or an unlikely set of A's or Q's), but you should probably bet strongly (pot-size) or raise him big to protect against draws, bust him if he has AK or A9, and get all your money in on the flop so that you have a chance to outdraw if you're up against a set of 9's.

To take another example, if I called with 99 HU against a good player in a raised pot and the flop is 29Q all diff. suits, I will generally check/call the flop and then hit him with a big raise on the turn, a check-raise if I'm in first position.

I think that the best method for maximizing profit in situations where you flop a very strong hand and your opponents are weak is in general to simply represent a weak hand as well. I flopped top two pair with A-Q earlier today and played it in an interesting way that ended up being pretty successful. I was hoping to represent aces with a weak kicker, so I check-called the flop, and made medium sized bets on the turn and river. I even got a raise out of my opponent on the river who was holding A-8 (granted he wasn't a very good player).
