Let's face it, some of us are starting with a smallish bankroll and want to move up in levels quickly, say to the $200 buy in NL game. That's my fantasy. Tried to do it a few years ago, started out with $50 at $10 buy in NL. It's so easy at that level, I quickly moved up to $25 buy in, then to $50, even to $100. Playing outside my bankroll the whole time, but with confidence.

Once I had $400, I sat with $200 at a $1/$2 NL table, and played KK very badly to lose my whole buy in against AA.

I moved back down, as was my "plan" if things didn't go well at $200 NL.

Back at the $50 table, though, I suddenly felt like a god of poker. I already trashed this level, right? I can push people around and rebuild my stack even faster. Consequently, I gave another $150 away on big bluffs...back to square one.

Has anyone else had this experience? Overconfidence when moving down a level?

As I'm coming to see, this is just one more (somewhat obscure) aspect of the psychology of bankroll management.

My aggressive advancement strategy is beginning to look less attractive, the more I think about it. I think I'll stay down where I'm playing well until I really have enough to move up.

lol @ "aggressive advancement strategy"

There is no advancement when you do that. Your skill level can only decrease.

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

Whilst theres probably some merit in what you say, I cant get over the fact you use the term bankroll management in a post displaying absolutely no concept of what that term means.
Just playing to improve.

Bjsaust, maybe you're just too stupid to make the connection. Sheesh. And swiggidy, learn to read. Umm, no, bankroll management is not an obscure concept. Apparently, my point regarding an *aspect* of poor bankroll management, namely, moving up in level too quickly (an often discussed issue, in this forum), and then moving back down and experiencing overconfidence, was over the heads of bjsaust and swiggidy.

I guess I'll dumb it down in the future.

You played 200NL with 2 buyins, and then moved down to 50NL and felt overconfident with 4 buyins.

Theres no room for the term Bankroll Management in that post.
Just playing to improve.
