99 utg, i limp

flop: 9TJ 2 suited.

i bet 1.5x pot. 1 caller...

am i forced to make a huge bet (which in this case was my stack) in this position? i cant afford to give free cards but by betting im assuming im even ahead. the made straight could very well be smooth calling but because of my position i cant check.

thoughts?

Why is your stack the size of 1.5 x pot?

I think you just bet it and hope for a board pair. If you meet major resistance, you might be able to fold ... but the money would have to be deep. If you meet minor resistance, you call and again hope for the board pair.

To answer the original question, if you stack is 1.5 x pot: Yes, you are destined to put your stack in and possibly lose it here.

to clarify, the pot was already pretty large preflop.

by betting 1.5x the pot on the flop and getting a caller it had become quite large.

i dropped $60 into the pot on the turn (which was at $5x then). i couldnt see betting any less as an option and i hated to check.

I see. That's a tough position to be in. I'd probably bet less on the turn, maybe $30-$40. I don't want to bet $60 and be forced to call a raise. But this might be the wrong thing to do. I agree you can't check.

You have a large preflop pot and the flop comes JT9. QK is a very likely hand for someone to be playing. You need to slow down and hope for the board to pair.

Possition is important, and your possition sucks, so I'd check/call small bets on the flop, and turn and fold if I don't improve on the river.

i am likely holding the best hand here, can i really afford to give free cards to the flush/straight chasers?

of course position would be nice here, but since i dont have it, i dont have much to do.

Likely, maybe. But by likely I'd say 70% of the time. You LIMPED into this pot, that isn't a large investment. If you had called a huge bet preflop then you would play differently.

Don't lose good money chasing bad money and don't fall in love with your hand.
