Hello all-
I've started playing poker online a few months ago playing limit, NL, and some tourny's, showing a profit in each (huzzah!). I've found that I like NL best and would like to find ways to improve my game. So my question to each of you is this: If you had one piece of advice to give on NL ring games what would it be? (Note - as of recent I've been playing party's 25NL tables, anywhere from 1-4 tables at a time)

Use position to your advantage. Oh .. and flop sets as previously said. I know that's 2 things but what the heck.

Knowing when to fold is more important for your bankroll than focussing only on your made hands.

For skill progression I would recommend learning these in somewhat this order:
Play tight (implies positional knowledge)
Learn your odds for different draws (gutshot, flush draw, OESD, etc)
Learn to calculate pot odds on the fly and relate them to your hand.
It goes on from there of course.
The advice I would tak onto that is, don’t bluff the low limits and don’t try and pick off bluffs. Learning to spot bluffs takes a lot of experience.

Start by playing the right cards preflop. If you are playing at a 10 player table don’t even waste your time with Hands link A10. Play solid cards and look for sets. Don’t get fancy. Don’t call raises with hands like AJ and AQ they are a recipe for disaster.

Thanks for the replies. Thus far I think my biggest problem has been tilting - fortunately I've been able to make great strides lately in preventing it. Anyway, for the people that have used or are using Poker Tracker - is this worth the investment?

Yes...Trust me. I thought about buying it for a long time and it was well worth the investment. You can track everything you are doing right and wrong. You can also track the adjustments you are trying to make in your game.

There are some real weak-tights at the lower limits which that advice doesn't apply to at all. One of my IRL buddies 4-tables the NL10 game and makes more then he does at his job. And he can be pushed off a hand so easily...

After 4 months and about 15000 hands, I purchased poker tracker. As Lodogg says, you will discover things. For example, not knowing any better (and I hadn't yet discovered FTR), I found that I was consistently losing money playing A2 - A 10. Obvious now, but from the first day with PT, I seldom if EVER play those cards. Same with cards like K 10, KJ OOP, and A Q os OOP.
Plus, I try to go back frequently and look at my big losses and then replay the hand. I ask myself why did I do what I did and how would I do it now. From that I surmised I was just too stubborn "to lay down" a hand that was leading after the flop but ultimately counterfeited on the turn.
Note to self: Need to work harder on laying down a 2nd best hand.
