 I'm trying to study ranges (something I know semi-novices like me need to do a lot of) and I've been using PokerStove lately to analyze my hands. I know that Stove comes up with its calculation based on a all-in scenarios to the showdown, but I think I need to adjust a lot of the hands it says has a higher value over others when I'm trying to put opponents on hands. Here are a couple of examples:

If a villain has a 25% VPIP, Stove says it should include hands like K6s but not the small pairs 55-22. This seems way off to me. Is someone (who's not an total idiot) really going to play a trash hand like K6so over 55? It gets even wackier wacky at 35%. Stove suggests that complete garbage like Q5s or K7o or 97s is better than 44. Hmmm.

I understand how technically this works, but I'm wondering how I should adjust my reading when using Stove. I'm trying to memorize (more or less) what kinds of hands get included in certain ranges, but I don think at the higher %'s Stove is a good guide.

How do you modify some of these hands? Which ones should I remove or add do you think?

 Definitely put 22-55 over K6s in most cases. After playing a bit, it should be a lot easier to assign ranges depending on play, especially if they are a regular who you know would open 22-55 over K6s).

You can also try BigBet Software . It's a program similar to PokerStove but allows you set hand rankings by different types. One type is "6max cash groups" which gives a much better range for what you are trying to do.

 Pokerstove is NOT a tool that translates vpip's or pfr's into ranges for you. Using it at such will only lead to disaster. No matter what program you use, you still have to make the range yourself.

Which hands you add or remove when altering pokerstove's preset range however, is highly dependent on the player. You can almost always remove the junk like K6o though and replace it by something better...exactly what depends on who we're talking about.

 you're making an important step, nice work. Some ideas.
1) go into stove and see what sort of % all the pocket pairs together comes up to
2) now suited aces
3) now broadways
4) now suited Kx, Qx, Jx
etc.
this will be huge for helping you to form ranges.

like, say someone is 6% from UTG, is he gonna be something like 88+/AQ+/KQs? is this too wide or too narrow? which hands should we add or take out?

say someone is 25% from the button. All pairs are going to be in his range. All aces. What extra stuff? add the type of things you would be opening with. Note that most players, fish included, like high cards, suited cards, and connected cards. Note that many fish overvalue suitedness.
