Hello!

I am playing Poker for about 3 months and am doing quite well in the .10/.20 nolimit cashgames. In one year from now I dont get finacial support anymore for my studies. Because I dont want to do some shitty job in one year I set myself the goal to earn a good part of my income multitabling nolimit cashgames, i would be satisfied with about 650$ including bonuswhoring. I am a bit confused which longterm winrates one could expect in NL100 games. Some say 10BB/100hands , some told me i should only expect 2-3BB/100. Could you help me out with that? I really want to know what is possible if you are a good player. I just need a clear goal. Of course I know Poker is a irregular income but 1000$ in the median should be possible, if I really work to get better reading all the books and such on. Im not a native english speaker so excuse some failures

Thanks a lot

You are too new to be planning on paying for things through poker. Just focus on playing and improving.

One day, if you work hard enough its very possible you will be able to make that sort of money through poker. (By the way the BB/100 question is largly irrelevant since your hourly rate will depend on how many tables/hands you get through in an hour).

It is possible you will even manage to get there in a year. If you want to do it though you will need to be concentrating on play rather than money goals, and Id imagine it would be better if you didnt have the pressure of knowing you NEED to get to 100NL in a year.

Focus on your game. If and when it gets to a stage where you can pay for life with poker then start cashing out. You cant start planning when thats going to happen until you get there....or at least close.
gabe: Ive dropped almost 100k in the past 35 days.

bigspenda73: But how much did you win?

jackvance is an unknown quantity at this point
What happens to a lot of people, is they run good for a while, start dreaming about making a living out of poker.. then run dry, get a downswing etc and find out how it isn't so easy and pretty after all.

don't consider paying for your living with poker until you can be a winning 200nl+ 8+ tabler.

jack and renton are right as usual. A beginner can't expect more than 8bb/100 (at your stakes, about $4/hr multitabling). Consider this a hobby that -- unlike other hobbies -- brings a tiny bit of money in instead of costing money.

Get 50,000 hands in, see what your real winrate is, and plan from there.

Thanks alot for your fast replies!

I think you are right that I should concentrate on becoming a good poker rather than chasing some money goals. I just need a realistic goal that can drive me to my maximum motivation. I really do not think it is so unrealistic earning about 500$ in the median monthly multitabling NL100
games. Are there any players that could tell me how many BBs per 100 hands a good/very good player is able to make when he is 4tabling NL100 games? I would really like to know that! Would 5BB be possible?

I know Renton means well but I'm not sure it's as cut and dry as this. I don't think you have to be able to 8-table 200 NL to fund your living playing poker. Poker is my main source of income (that and student loans ) and I think you could make a decent buck off playing 4-6 tables, especially 6-Max.
Furthermore, there are obviously so many different factors to consider : skill level, rakeback, emergency funds/BR management, discpline, how much time you can devote to your poker sessions etc.. that are just as important as how many BBs/100 you can run at on a certain level.

I do agree that you should play poker for fun until you have a bankroll that can take a steep downswing (steeper than you could ever imagine) and not ruin your financial situation. Plus you need to think about your future. Online poker may not be here forever, or if it is it may not be as profitable as it is right now. Stick to getting an education so that you at least have something to fall back on.

There are some great articles stickified on these forums that discuss making a living at playing poker and the steps you need to take. Take some time and read all of them and you'll have a more realistic approach to your goals.
Good luck!

What I mean to say is that you need to grossly overshoot the "traditional" income boundaries in order to make a living playing poker, because you need to be prepared for a downswing.

If your hourly rate playing poker is $30, that isn't enough, because you will go on breakeven streaks and downswings and only have like 300 bucks stored away. Whereas if your avg hourly rate is $100 or $200, you can store some money away in preparation.

BTW 6 tables of six max is nearly equivalent to 9 tables full ring so I would count that as enough tables for sure.

I think $30/h is enough to make a living off poker as long as you understand that it might not last and hopefully have something to fall back on. More important is to have saved up for at least 6 months and preferably a years living expences on the side. Bankroll requirements should also be a lot higher than for the casual player, I wouldn't play any level with less than 50 buyins if its your sole income.

Renton and Coco give good advice.

I wouldn't worry too much about winrates just yet. Give it a try, and play a bunch of hands at the appropriate level. Post some stats, or hands that gave you problems on these forums and soon enough you'l be well along your way to becoming a better poker player if you analyze your play and commit yourself to getting better. Also remember not to get caught up on small sample sizes.
Play a lot and good luck.
