Great post. Started to incorporate it fully into my game and it has saved me heaps. Can't wait for the book man, the stuff you write is awesome.

This is definately something I've taken to heart in ring games, and it's paid off, saving me a lot of little change and erasing a lot of potentially crippling hands. Can't wait to see the full thing, keep it up aok.

any time i limp a hand from SB, i always tell myself "i will fold to a re-raise etc" if its a weak hand.

take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

If you can get away from a miss, isn't there something to be said for limping reasonable hands with pot odds (i.e. 4 limpers and you have 67s - this is a clear fold from EP, but a clear complete from SB IMO).

Hi aokrongly
Good luck with writing the book, I am quite excited to find out what the final product will look like.
Some comments:

So many people lose so much money by playing cards on the small blind that they would never play anywhere else.
|
Yes, very few people play correctly from the SB. You gave one example of a difficult situation a person can get himself into by completing with a trash hand but I think its important to get the reasons across. I think you need to state clearly that position is your main disadvantage in the SB and that you can complete the SB with lots of hands (because of the discount) but you should rarely continue with the hand after the flop (you only need to win one out of x hands to make up for al the small bets you lose when you fold on the flop - you need to give some examples of pot odds before the flop and how often you need to win a hand to break even). Also playing weaker hands require you to play much better postflop.

Keep the same calling requirements for the small blind as you would for any early position.
|
I dont agree. The SB position is similiar to EP regarding the position but you are getting a far better price. Therefore you can play more hands from the small blind (given you only have to call half a BB) than you can from EP.

You have crappy cards! You pulled yourself into a mind screw job!
|
I hate to be a nit but I think you need to stay away from words like "crappy" and expressions like "mind screw job" if you are writing a book (as opposed to posts on a forum).
hope you can find something useful in my comments!

haha yeah, this kind of gets to me when i'm reading the (future) book contents, too. however, i think aok's goal is to make this book UNLIKE other poker books and to make it friendly and fun to read. he wants to keep it in kind of a forum/blog style because he wants it to reflect how he thinks. thanks to my millions of english courses and too many essays, i've totally been conditioned to write formally and "properly" too, but i think writing it the way aok is planning to write it is a good idea. it's original and different.
