NB - ignore passive in the title

Villain is 65/21/31 (agg%) over 111 hands. He hasn't folded to a 3 bet in 4 opportunities.

I have some reads on him, but not stored on HEM. His stats tell a story anyway.

Here I'm seeking advice more on whether I got his range right

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $0.05 BB (6 handed) - Poker-Stars Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Hero (MP) ($5.03)
CO ($5)
Button ($5)
SB ($5)
BB ($13.07)
UTG ($14.88)

Preflop: Hero is MP with ,
UTG bets $0.15, Hero raises to $0.60, 4 folds, UTG calls $0.45

After 3betting, I put him on having seen what he's come up with before at showdown:
66+,A8s+,K9s+,Q9s+,J9s+,T9s,AQo+,KQo

Flop: ($1.27) , , (2 players)
UTG checks, Hero checks

We both check so I narrow range to

88,ATs+,A8s,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,AQo+,KQo

Since he was passive on the flop by checking, maybe I shouldn't have ruled out the fact that he could be slowplaiying sets/stronger hands...that said, I just don't think he wouldn't have bet sets on the flop

Turn: ($1.27) (2 players)
UTG bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

I think he continues with

the same range but also think he could be slowplaying a set or be on a straight draw, or just bluffing. I veer towards the latter two since I removed sets from his range after the flop.

88,ATs+,A8s,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,AQo+,KQo

River: ($2.27) (2 players)
UTG bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

I put him on the same range as before or air. I call because I'm convinced he was bluffing, although based on the bet size I probably should have folded.

Total pot: $3.27 | Rake: $0.15

I've been tossing back a few, so I'm not going to overanalyze this. I think you played it ok, hoping to hit an overcard. Judging by his small bets, I'd say that 80% of the time he's got a small pair. Calling with the OC's is not a big mistake imo, but maybe a little spewy.

I doubt this guy is folding any pair or ace pre to a 3bet.

This is a spot where, once we miss the flop, I'm mostly done with the hand, given the texture. This is a spot where timing would influence a potential call, but I can see this asshole having 74 or some shit. The duplicate bet is a fairly player-specific tell.

In my experience when a fishy player bets the same size two streets the value of their hand has not improved since the first bet, in which case if you think he has nothing on the turn we shouldn't be calling the turn and folding the river to this sizing.

The problem is if he's turning something into a bluff quite often a bunch of stuff with showdown value vs your line (22+, 64 kinda stuff) will be "accidentally" be in there.

Without reads on villain's betting and donking tendencies it's also possible this is their idea of value trying not to scare you off your weak post-flop line. It's because of this I wouldn't rule out flopped sets or small overpairs unless I knew villain has otherwise always jammed lots of money in very quickly with strong hands, although it's fair to discount them.

How does villain's UTG raise percentage compare to the other positions? A lot of the time a loose player like this won't have the gradual increase through positions that you'd see from a competent player, they'll just open whatever from wherever. If the latter, the river range you assign him (88,ATs+,A8s,KTs+,QTs+,JTs,AQo+,KQo) seems a little too much in your favour for me to agree with it. Those hands are certainly in his range, but despite opening UTG, with him not having folded to a 3bet yet there's potentially every pocket pair and even some weird connectors.

Personally, I would've either bet the flop to see where you're at since most people fold if they have nothing hit and nothing to draw for.

Either that or I would've folded the turn since you can really hope to hit an overcard on the river and you have nothing to draw for. Yes, it's a small bet but like you mentioned, some people like to slowplay and lure you into either a reraise or just getting value out of a strong hand they made on the flop/turn.

I'd be especially concerned if it was a passive player. Just cause I think they wouldn't put out a bet unless they have at least a pair.

You didn't really have anything after the turn and it looked like he thought he had something however weak it might be. You weren't trying to bluff him, so why stay in? I agree, fold the turn.

In retrospect the range I assigned to him wasn't strong enough. I made one adjustment in PokerStove to the turn range, and it told me why I should have folded the turn.
