Post subject: 2NL Strategy/Learning Path Question

Since I'm new to the forum I figured I've go ahead and get my first post in instead of trolling for months to come out of nowhere with a question.
I have read through many different articles on the site, but I am trying to articulate the best possible strategy to build on (building the base before I try to put up the walls to my house).
So far I have surmised that playing at 2NL I should be.
- Playing a general TAG style - With exceptions if need be (based on opponent reads)
- Understanding Value Bets, Implied Odds, and Pot Odds
- Playing positionally
- Selecting loose tables (I generally go with a VPIP of 30-40%...)
- And for more difficult opponents, learning how to read betting patterns/player tendencies and adjusting
There was an old thread that suggested even if you don't know what the poker solution is that you first have to identify what the problem is before you can figure out how to fix the issue. I don't have near a large enough sample size of hands to be sure I'm on the right track playing yet, nor do I have specific hands to ask questions about yet (only around 3000 in), but wanted to see if I am in the right direction of the generally accepted playing style and learning path for beginning poker.

Play 10k hands, post stats, make changes, repeat until it's hard to find obvious changes to make

Sounds like a plan. Now here's a stupid question, when you guys want the stats posted after 10k hands, do you mean the positional statistics I can get from Stars from the "requests>statistics" tab or something else? (I'm imagining something else, but I'm obviously not super familiar with the software yet).

Go download yourself a free trial of Holdem Manager (HEM) and PokerTracker (PT3). Decide which one you like best and fork over the dough. It's worth it. Just don't go apeshit looking at stats and such over short samples. Stick with session reviews. When you download them, you'll know what I mean. Good luck.

We're talking about from a database program. There are free trials available for the two best (pokertracker 3 and holdem manager).

From the learning standpoint, the only thing I'd change is:
- playing loose tables to playing tight tables
Players are still fishy even though they play tight. You don't learn much pounding 90 vpip guys that can't fold anything.
Also for 6-max, you should also experiment with LAG play (on maximum 2 tables), focusing mostly on opponents (again this is better on tigher tables, than against guys that can't fold shit).
