I ran into what I felt like was a pretty tricky spot with AK earlier. Villain with 47/13 over 15 hands. No reads yet. Here's how the hand played out:

Full Tilt No-Limit Hold'em, $0.10 BB (8 handed) - Full-Tilt Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com

Button ($2)
SB ($7.98)
Villain (BB) ($9.40)
UTG ($12.60)
UTG+1 ($2.52)
MP1 ($9.13)
Hero (MP2) ($9.70)
CO ($2.10)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with A, K
3 folds, Hero bets $0.40, 3 folds, Villain calls $0.30

Flop: ($0.85) 2, Q, A (2 players)
Villain bets $0.50, Hero calls $0.50

Turn: ($1.85) J (2 players)
Villain bets $1.10, Hero raises to $3.80, Villain raises to $8.50 (All-In), Hero ???

Now, I know a lot of people are probably going to say I should have raised the flop, and I feel like, yeah, I probably should have. But, my thinking at the time was that my AK was probably the best hand, and that it was pretty unlikely that he's taking this line with a spade draw. I felt like he probably just had an ace with a lower kicker, but I was a bit worried he had made aces up.

I figured that he was going to be betting out on any turn card, so while I wasn't thrilled with the J of spades, I estimated that I still had most of his range beat, so I put in a raise, thinking the scare card on the turn would have him folding. When he shoved instead, I had a really hard time figuring out what hands he could have...

I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on how I should have played this. Was it a terrible play to flat call on the flop with TPTK and so many draws out there? As played, was the raise on the turn a good play, or should I have flat called there as well? Can I lay this hand down when he shoves?

Thanks.

i actually like the flop call. and i call on the turn, i think raising the turn might be spewy if you don't plan on calling a shove.

Do you realize youre probably ahead of villains donking flop range, and not so much after he bets turn? Nevertheless, you chose turn to make your "value-raise".

Reread the bold and look for the mistake with that logic.

I think I see your point. What I was thinking was that after the turn card I was still ahead, but that the other guy could very well have picked up a straight draw or a flush draw, and I didn't want him to get the right price to draw to it, hence the raise on the turn. Whether this was a sound strategy or not, I hope it was at least logically consistent.

When you price out draws you want villains to CALL, not FOLD.
