In the live limit games I play in, there's a special rule when you get heads-up. At that point, the cap no longer applies, and the players can continue betting until they are all-in no matter how many raises it takes. But, they still have to go raise-by-raise, i.e., in $9/$18, you have to raise $18, and then the other guy raises another $18, etc., until one of you is all-in.

The other day, two players at my table were heads up on the river with a board that was 7h 6h 4h and 2 blanks. One player had Ah9h. The other one had 3h5h. They were both deep stacks, more than $450 each.

And they did, in fact, keep raising until one of them was all in (something on the order of over 20 bets!), with the result that the winner, with the straight flush, took down a pot of more than $900.

My question is, if you have the Ah9h, at what point during this process, if any, do you put Villain on a potential straight flush and stop raising? (Obviously, this depends on reads, etc., but both of these players in the remainder of their play appeared to be relatively tight, aggressive players-- the guy with the straight flush maybe a tad looser than the guy with the nut flush, but he was also a pretty skilled player post-flop.)

tough situation. It would probably take me 10 raises to stop IF I consider the other guy a very solid player. IF he is a fish I dont stop and if he has the str8flush, so be it.

I've played at games like that (namely at Everest). I've made pretty darn good profits getting it all in with the nuts against poorer players. Somehow, i tended to slow down after 10 or so raises if i had the semi-nuts (say top boat, low quads being the nuts) but most of the time i lost value. This being said, the level at Everest 1/2 when I played there was quite poor, and your 9/18 opponents are probably not going crazy just like that.
In this situation, i guess, if you know villain is solid, you can assume he will put you on the nut-flush after you raise like 10 times, and if he still keeps raising, either he is totally mad-tilting, or he has better.

After 6 bets, you better have the nuts.

I agree with both asd and Fnord. Live players are generally worse (more loose and much more passive) than online, but when it comes to people making epic spews with non-nut hands, the online maniacs are far worse.

Live you should really, really consider just calling after 5-6 raises. Online unless the guy is solid/not terrible, I'd go a few more for good measure.
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

When it finally dawns on you that you don't have the nuts?

i dont know if u ever stop raising its not easy to put someone on a straight flush unless its 4 to a straight on the flop i think u just have to lose all your money right here its like KK vs AA preflop it is just more profitable to not back off

You've got the third nuts here behind 8h5h and 5h3h. At some point I think you can suspend your disbelief that villian is actually playing one of those hands and not just donating 20 BB to you with KhXh.

this is awesome. sometimes it takes a couple raises longer than others, but it does eventually dawn on you that you'd better just call. now, if he shows me something stupid, i will take it a bit farther the next time.

...or just ask for security to escort the dumbass to his car when he leaves because he may get jumped solely for being too stupid to cross the street w/o help.
