I started cashing when my earnings surpassed what I lived on already... on a monthly basis

I'm not understanding what you mean. Could you clarify with a numerical example?

I personally try to keep at least $750 in my account and cash out $500 whenever I get above $1250. It really depends on what sized bankroll you are comfortable playing with and what limit you play at though.

Sorta true. Go up for a visit. If you feel like you'll be profitable, set up shop there.
But if you don't, stay at the stakes that are profitable for you. Cash out. Build up again and visit the next level again. Patience.
I visited 1/2 Limit the other day with elipsesjeff. And went crying home to Mama within 20 minutes.

Cashing out all depends on your goals.
If your goal is to remain at your current limit forever.. Keep whatever $$ you need for your current limit and cashout X amount over that.
Example. I want to play 2/4 LHE but keep a BR of 300BB's. $1200
Lets say I set my Cashout goal @ $1500. Every time I hit $1500 I cash out $300 returning to my original $1200.
But if your goal is to move up limits then you probably don't want to cash out. If you need the $$$ cashed out, pull out a lesser amount.
Example. When you hit $1500 you only take out $200 instead, leaving $1300. Then move your cashout to $1600, hit $1600, cash out $200 leaving $1400, lather rinse repeate until your NEW Br is met.

this is what I meant... I started cashing out when I was able to put 25% of my earnings back into my poker bankroll, and the other 75% I used to live off of (sort of like a monthly paycheck). Eventually I no longer needed a job.
