What is the minimum buy-in at a casino (foxwoods is where i'm closest too) for $4/$8 and $5/$10 limit holdem ?
I've played 1/2 NL there a few times and I don't like it. its fishy, and you get morons raising all in a lot. A few people I know recommended 5/10 b/c its a higher caliber of players playing.
Just wondering how much I should bring to the table (minimal amount only). The 100 bb's like most of you will say seems somewhat excessive, doesnt it ?

Not that I know much about it at all, but I would bring enough so that on a fairly bad night, If I hit a perfect hand on that last hand I can still Cap all betting rounds.
50bb minimum??? (again, i'm not an expert in this at all, just thats my line of thought, for however much or little it's worth)

Buy in with the minimum and you will go broke. I suggest buying in with 50BB.

The minimum at most cardrooms is 5 big bets (BBs). Sometimes it is 10BBs.
Buying in for less than 20BBs is ridiculous, however.
There is usually a typical buy in for most games.
3/6 and 4/8 is usualy 1 rack of $1 chips or $100
6/12 is 1 rack of $2 chips.
5/10 is usually also $200 (two stacks of red chips)
10/20 is usually 1 rack of $5 chips.
Buy in for the typical amount, but make sure you always have more than 5BBs. This ensures that if you make a hand, you get the most for it. If your chips start getting low, buy another rack.
I would reccomend Bringing at least 50BBs with you though, in case you start with a cold run of cards.
You mention NL though. Always buy in for the max (usually 50-100 times the big blind,) and bring at least 3 buy ins.
And one last point of advice. If you can't beat a fishy table, You will get crushed at a table of better players.
*edit: when I say "bring" to the table I mean it literally. This was not advice to play outside your bankroll (at least 300 big bets) but just how much cash you should expect to have in your pocket.

To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.

Losing players (re)buy in short as a way to control their loses. What kind of player are you?

I buy in for 20bb and always have at least 20 to 30bb more in my pocket... 30bb is probably a bettor suggestion but this system works well for me...

I buy in for 50BB in limit, most good players do. In a tough game I might buyin for less hoping they think I am a sucker, but not often.

I can't agree with this statement at all, there is no true rule of thumb here but 20-50bb seems to be the most common answer that will be given... I'm not sure that you can say "most good players" here, I think the buy-in is relative to what the player is conferrable with, but like someone said above buying in for less then 20bb is really stupid unless you want to use a smaller buy-in for psychology reasons (most the time this will not apply), so I don't think any one person is totally right on this subject but, collectively it's 20-50bb original buy in and another 20-50bb in your pocket...

25 BB should be enough.... 2/4-$100; 3/6-$150; 4/8-$200, etc.

If you know the rules and have the roll, you should be playing at least 3/6 or 4/8 live. Otherwise the rake + tips + jackpot is way too oppressive.

Hehe, I sit at 10/20 with $1k. Imagine the look on all the old fart's faces when I sit down with two racks of red. . . especially when I look so young.
I just like the feeling of handing over 10 bills for 2 racks of chips. Then theres the feeling of stacking ALL the chips while you wait for the BB. I sometimes cant get them all to stay up hehe. I'm also the big stack on the table.
My favorite line at a 10/20 game: "I'll buy in for $100 please"
Its even better when you leave with 3 racks when you only brought two. Gawd, I love live play.

Live play is 10000000000 times better then online. Now that they have poker in oklahoma I have cancelled all of my online accounts because I just see no reason to ever go back.

The min where I play is 5BB. I usually go in with 25BB, but only because I'm poor and can not afford any more. I feel that 50BB is the best.
btw fnord...who tips the dealer? :P

I agree, I typically play 6/12 live and one night I left with 5 racks. It feels great.

I really hope this is just a joke. You do tip the dealer for every pot unless you just get the blinds, right?

I think it was a joke b/c he put a smiley face there. You must absolutely tip the dealer and if you don't you are an ass.

My standard tips:
Nothing for a really small pot (just blinds, or no flop action) unless I pick up a couple of them, then I'll throw in a $1.
$1 for most pots
$2 for a monster
5% on jackpots/promotions
$1 or $2 for exceptional service
I'm a tight tipper...

I usually play 5/10:
$1 for 95% of the pots
$2 for Super large pots
an extra $1 if the dealer is hot (rare) or if they are really good.
I also won't hesitate to not tip small- med pots if the dealer is really terrible or rude. Unfortunately this happens too much where I play. I don't know how many times I have to tell the dealers what to do...
