I think it is essential. I use it(or try to ) When I am pushing people of pots such as in a small pot where you are sure that someone will bet really close to your right. The other time you can use is when there are quite a few opponents and you have a very strong draw like nut flush or OESD. Then I am trying to Juice the pot so those times that I win, I want to win big. I recently bought Small Stakes Hold’em and I highly recommended it.

check raising is really effective. i am too "straight forward" and don't think to do it sometimes, ill just bet without thinking. its definitely something i need to use more.

basically check raising is used to protect hands and force people to call unprofitably.
for example, you have top pair, but the board is a 2 flush, and you are first to act on the flop. if the pot was 7 small bets, you betting will give everyone odds to call for the flush draw. if you wait until someone late bets, and you raise, not everyone caught in between has to call 2 bets and their odds are cut in half, enough to make it unprofitable.
