EP2, button, and BB in unraised pot, board KQJ with 2 diamonds.

BB (with $12 in his stack) bets, EP2 calls, button raises. I'm thinking a couple diamonds jamming the pot, of course.

Turn comes a club, checks to button who bets out. Both call, river is a diamond.

Button bets and BB calls. Both show mediocre diamonds -- button's are better.

What's with the turn play? Button chose not to take the free card, anyone have an idea why?

He's got position and another busted draw might fold if he bets the turn and river. If he checks behind on the turn, he'll get a call.

Another reason to bet the turn is when you want to go to showdown (say you had a piece of the flop, maybe J8s). If you check behind on the turn, aggressive players will autobet the river. If you know you're going to call a river bet, you're better off betting the turn, since that will give your opponents an opportunity to fold. You'll get checked to on the river a very high percentage of the time, both when blanks hit and when draws are completed, so it will cost the same. People check raise completed draws (even obvious ones) too often, IMO.

I really don't like semi bluffing into boards with three broadway cards, though. Someone will want to go to showdown far too often.

This is SUCH an important point. Excellent post koolmoe. This concept has been one of the largest improvements to my game as of late.

I've been using this play quite a bit when I want to get a mediocre hand to showdown from position. You can dodge a lot of river checkraises by checking behind with a marginal hand on the river, and still look your opp up.

Heh ... clear as crystal upon further reflection. I've got a lot to learn about these levels; we don't do that at .5/1, 1/2...

Because playing a hand in the most straight-forward, profitable way isn't much fun.

From "Why You Suck..."

You raise the flop "for a free card" too often and then proceed to semi-bluff the turn anyway.
