raise turn? why? i am a bit worried about AJ/QJ in a raised pot, but dont want to spook TT or AK out, either. villain was rather bluffy, but shuts down when you take initiative back. its the flop 3bet that spooked me.

Definitely raise turn. In fact, the only reason not to cap the flop is so you can raise the turn.

Since he 3bet the flop, you feel he probably has a real hand. Question 1 is what counts as a 'real hand' for him, and Question 2 is what hands are in his BB calling range pf.

Q1:
a): Only Jx or QQ? Refer to Q2.

b): Above + FD? Raise.

c): Above + OESD? Raise.

d): Above + weirdly played AA/KK? Raise.

e): Above + AQ, KQ? Raise.

f): Above + QT-? Raise.

g): Above + AK, AT? Raise.

h) Above + complete bluff? Raise. If he's bad enough to bluff 3bet the flop with air he may be bad enough to bluff 3bet the turn as well. Kaching!

Q2: If you're sure he would only 3bet an oddly-played QQ (no preflop raise) or Jx on the flop then the question is which Jx hands would he call (not re-raise) with preflop. AJ, QJ you are behind, JT, J9, J8... etc. you are ahead.

But I think this is giving him too much credit for tight play. More likely he does this with a wider range and even if that only includes the nut flush draw as well as QQ, Jx, you need to raise because you are likely ahead.

I would cap the turn and unless a A, Q, T, or diamond came I would bet/call or raise/call the river.

wow. thank you.

and, i thought i was getting better at capturing value. i never thought i should be capping the flop, and possibly the turn. and, though it didnt cross my mind that deeply, he IS capable of b-h.

Three common mistakes at low limits:

1) Overplaying good but not great hands, like KQ on QJJ board.

2) Huffing and bluffing. Thinking if they just keep raising the other person will eventually fold.

3) Assuming everyone else does 1) and 2) as much as they do.

I think Q-J and Q-Q can be ruled out almost completely because of the tendency of virtually all players (even aggressive ones) at this level to habitually slow-play these hands on the flop. (As well as the low number of possible combinations in which they could have be dealt.)

Anyways, frequently players that like to bluff a lot in this game are also notorious for overplaying hands. That said, I don't think you should give this player nearly as much credit as you are. I would just keep jamming the turn and only slow down if he keeps showing strength after a capped turn. That is, if he 3-bets after you raise the turn (which should be automatic), you cap and then he leads again on the river, I may just call, barring a read that he's a lunatic.
