I think a flop bet is the standard play here. You may get a free card for your 2 overs +2 backdoor draws. If trips are out there and they like to slow play, they will likely check to you on the turn, allowing you to check behind if you miss or pick up a draw.

Besides the potential free card, you have a lot of fold equity. A flop bet might win the pot right there.
As a general rule of thumb, when you are in position and you are the preflop raiser against a small field and it is checked to you, it's correct to c-bet nearly every time regardless of whether you caught any piece of the flop at all.

Yup then the turn plays totally different you could bet again on your draw or simply take a free card assuming it's checked to you...
I think he bet out only because you showed a ton of weakness by raising PF then checking the flop, that either means you missed completely or you have a monster...
when you raise the turn he most have thought his FD or pair was not good, to me it might look like you have Js full or Ts full
