Last night I was playing heads up with a buddy of mine. When we do this it's usually for no money or just $1 - we just like to sharpen our skills. We play a rotating format: NL hold 'em, PL omaha, PL triple draw, PL omaha 8.

We got into the omaha 8 part of the rotation and this hand came along. On the big blind I got A882 - the ace was suited to one of the eights. This looked mighty playable for heads up to me, so I bumped it by 2xBB, and my friend called the raise.

The flop came out A88. I didn't process the possible low draw (one of the dangers of playing omaha and omaha 8 almost back-to-back) or I would have probably bet something here; but instead I checked. He checked behind.

Turn card was an ace to give me quad eights and trip aces. I checked and he checked.

The river was a two, giving me quads, trips, and a pair - and a variety of boats. Of course I had almost no hope of getting any chips from him now, so I bet the full pot hoping he'd think I was stealing and call with some medium pair or something. The only other possibility was that he made some weird low, but if he did I obviously wasn't going to like it. He gave me the stink-eye and thought about it, but eventually folded. At that point I had to turn over and show him this behemoth hand that won me basically nothing, and he laughed at me. Nice.

What, not a fan..? Heh heh. It can be a brutal game, but we are both pretty tight and laid back when we play against each other, so the pots don't escalate the way you might expect. Usually somebody makes a 9 or 10 low early and bets the other guy out of the hand. Only a couple of times have we gone apeshit on that game.

If I am gonna play a game with such small edges, I at least want to play it in limit form. Are guys playing A-5 or 2-7?

2-7. I think you're right about the small edges, too - it gets absolutely brutal trying to make a hand stand up.
