Hey,

So this is a dumb question or request. Really dumb. Sophomoric. Moronic. But bear with me.

My friends are addicted to low-limit Texas Hold'em for our homegames. You know, the usual stuff--sit down, play with your buddies, down a few beers, get into fistfights when you lose your flush to a full house.

I'm burned out on it, though. I know this is rare, but after playing every wednesday from 8-12 for six months I need something else. I started playing Omaha online and I find it an interesting change; it's not completely different from Hold'em, but it makes for some interesting changes in strategy and a lot more crazy-arse winning hands (gotta fold that straight if you know the guy to your right's got a full boat; now that's exhilirating).

Okay, enough prefacing, here's the dumb part: I'm having trouble convincing the darn brutes to play a different game.

So will all you masters of rhetoric help me out in trying to form a persuasive argument that can change the heart of hardened Hold'em players (more particularly crappy Hold'em players that call with trash and either win on the river or go out in three turns ).

Although I'm gonna have to ask you to omit any argumentum ad baculum (that is "do it or I'm going to break your legs with a metal bat" or something of that nature), as effective as they might be.

/end dumbest...post...ever...

Hardly a stupid post. I was thinking about the same thing this morning (right after I had busted out of an Ohama tourney I had accidentally registered for on Stars - I don't even know how to play, other than I can only use two of my hole cards, and I have no clue as to what the low hand is. Regardless, I was chip leader for quite a while and busted out at 14th in a field of 45). What I'm thinking is that, at my next home game, when it comes my turn to deal I'll just suggest we do an Omaha hand - "What can it hurt? It's only one hand guys. It's pretty well the same but you get more hole cards. If you don't want to play just sit out this hand. Here, I'll even cover your blinds...yadda yadda yadda..." Of course, I've got some reading to do first.

You'll never convince people to move from something they know to something they don't know until they've sampled it a bit.

Miffed22001 is on a distinguished road
its probably never going to happen that you get your mates to play omaha.
i guess holdem is so popular because its so simple and it has all the techniques like bluffing etc.
So i cant give you an arguement to get them to play. Just tell them their are other forms and its worth trying em all and see if theyll do it. I got into 5 card draw because dsaxton told me it was a fish pond and my g/f's mate challenegd us to a game one night after a movie. So i guess just shuffle up and tell em your playing omaha

KoRnholio will become famous soon enough
You could have a dealer's choice night, with a set of games to pick from (say, Holdem, Omaha, 7 Stud and Pineapple). It's likely that all of you are equally unfamiliar with 7 Stud and Pineapple, so it could be fun to fish it up against each other
Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

Just tell them Omaha is holdem, its just from Nebraka instead of Texas. If the they are gullible maybe it will work?

Thanks for the advice; I actually managed to get everyone to play.

But it had nothing to do with my persuasions--its just that three people lost all their money and essentially gave hold'em "the finger."

I'll take it.

Top arguments for playing Omaha(esp O8)

1) Unlike Hold Em you won't get married to the top hand postflop(in O8 best starting hand is A2sA3s, in Omahi Hi it's AJsATs) if it's obvious you're beat on the flop.

2) You don't have to worry about bad flop/turn calls as much (presuming you know what you're doing) since 77.5% of your hand is known on the flop.

3) Runner Runner is less likely to burn you-since people who regularly chase runner runner don't last long.

4) The converse of that is that you will be burnt if you attempt runner runner-so as a result your play should become more disciplined and consistent.

5) No one starting hand preflop is more than a 25% underdog-because the flop trully defines your Omaha hand moreso than in Hold Em.

6) Because it's harder to get 4 cards to work together instead of 2 (esp when you have to use 2 from your hand and 3 from the board) you will play less hands but as a result your hands should be stronger than your opponents presuming you play correct.

7) Omaha has less variance then Hold Em-this derives from the above earlier rules. Therefore if you have to you can get by with a smaller bankroll (but try not to do that longterm).

8) In Omaha you get to drop the hammer on a huge edge less often; but when you do you nail them big. Whereas in Hold Em you are pushing smaller edges more often.

9) Since bluffing is not as common as in Hold Em, generally when someone bets/raises they have it. THerefore your ability to make reads and key laydowns will increase thus saving you bets on lost hands.

10) Since the resources on Omaha are less then in Hold Em,many of the Omaha casual players will be far worse then their Hold Em counterparts.

TLR is an unknown quantity at this point
Initially when we started playing omaha in our home game people liked it a lot because you get stronger hands then in holdem.
Weak players also like it because they do not understand starting hands and think most starting hands in omaha are playable -
QsQd4s3c - they think I have A PAIR OF QUEENS + A FLUSH OPTION + POSSIBLE STR8 = GREAT GREAT HAND

A good argument for playing omaha, or any other form of poker is that even if all you want to do is play texas holdem, your game will improve through playing other forms of poker.
