The player was new to the table, and he 3 bet me both times I open-raised. The first flopp sucked and I raised his flop bet, and then folded to his reraise. The second flop sucked and I folded to his bet.

I was determined to cap him next time .

Anyway, I love his river call........and he didn't 3 bet me for a Long while.

that river call, wow.. at 20-40

are those preflop caps for deception or what? I've watched people do this stuff even at $50-100 while shorthanded
take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

Hi

For me this cap wasn't so much about deception of MY hand. What I hoped my opp read into the cap was that I did not think that HIS hand was worth a 3-bet, and that I was going to make him pay for his aggression against me.

I got fortunate, as if I had lost this hand or had to fold down, I might as well leave the table...my ability to play marginal hands would be hurt, and he would probably fold if I skipped a few laps and then open raised.
I'd be seen as weak tight, and not likely to make much money.

Anyway, by winning I gained a couple of edges:
1. He knows I am capable of capping his 3 bet, so he can't consider 3 betting me as some type or re-steal opportunity.
2. I have shown him AND the rest of the table that I am capabale of capping with K7s. This should (and it did) give me more action on my future caps and 3 bets, because I was seen as loose agro pre-flop.
3. It also enabled me to just call a 3 bet HU with hands like AA, KK, QQ, as now I'm representing weakness, and if the flop is right, I get more way more action - and are they suprised and confused.

In my mind the reasonyou see more of this aggressive type play at 20/40 limits is because players want to win or lose the aggression war early before getting into the big bets. You also see it more when players DO NOT have a big Ace.

As such, one more small bet (to cap rather than just calling a 3 bet), is not as big a price to occasionally pay to gain the last edge of aggression, and it does disguise your holdings.

In the long run, it doesn't hurt at all to make the occasional loose cap. It may buy you an image that will make u more money, and it could help you steal pots when you missed the flop. U just have to be sure to let go at the right time.....

With the hand above , I think it was just ego acting on his part, and he didn't want to lose the pissing contest. He must of thought I was tilting - he was only partly right!!

33-77 just got counterfeited on the river, but the only way he wins a bet is by check/calling, so it's not entirely without value. The key is whether those holdings are possible for you and represent at least 9% (1/11.5) of your possible holdings given the previous action. Probably not.
