I have played about 12K hands at 1/2 limit holdem. Now i know this is not a lot of hands in the grand scheme of things but it is a good chunk. After 12K hands i am down 20 bb and have been hovering around break even for the last 5K hands or so. I have been up as much as 55 bb and down as much as 100 bb. I'm wondering if i should move down a level to .50/1.00, but here is my dilemma:
At 1/2 limit, as i said, i am breaking even poker wise, but i have earned well over $300 during those 12K hands in bonus money. If i move down a level, based on the bonus/rake system at the site i play on (which i will not say since i feel it is irrelevant), i would only earn bonus money equal to about 1/4 of the rate i earn it now. On the other hand moving down a level should give me easier competition and will allow me to work on my game.
To be honest though, i've read books, played many hands (way more than the 12K), i watch poker, read poker, etc. etc. and consider myself to be an above average player who still can improve. I play tight aggressive poker for the most part and try to adjust depending on what kind of table i'm sitting at.
Should i sacrafice bonus money and move down a level or keep grinding it out at 1/2 and see what happens? Personally, making up hundreds of dollars in bonus money at a lower level seems tough to do, but at the same time i want to be a winning poker player.
You should've played those kings Mike..........
You're an a**hole..........
I know..........

You're probably on the cusp of beating the game for a nice sum. If the money isn't an issue stick with it.

Remember it's a negative sum game and most players lose.

For what it's worth I dropped $300 in about 300 hands today. Then made most of it back over the next 300. Lots of putting in extra bets on the flop + turn and losing on the river.

the experts have spoken and I would like to add some. If your bankroll isnt too much depleted, stick to it I went through/been going through the exact thing what you are going through except i am not even making that much bonus money (i play exclusively at party).

for about 5000 hands i was either +15 bb or -15 bb. it was very frustrating. I would make some good wins and then loose most of it on river suck outs or folding for some time and then taking my TPTK against someones overpair or whatever .

then suddenly in a span of 1000 hands got some good cards ( not even a rush, just a fair share of cards/good flop and no terrible 2 outer against me ) and am close to 1bb/100 in 6500 hands. So its pretty easy to make most of it back once the downswing ends (i hope mine have ended .)

just my 0.02 cents. and dont ever stop posting critical hands for feedback. FTR guys rock in giving you advice especially non result oriented advice.

limit is a tough game, and will take some time before you see any real profit, but with proper game selection and play I assure you it will come.
take your ego out of the equation and judge the situation dispassionately

Are you playing PP 1/2 6-max? I played about 9K hands at that game clearing bonuses and ended up down about 100 BB.

I was mostly playing 5/10 6 max at the time (and beating it for around 2BB/100 through about 45K hands) and played 1/2 strictly for clearing bonuses as quickly as possible.

I think we've all gone through things like this when we move up. I know every time I've made a jump there has been an adjustment period, but nothing prepared me for what I went through moving from 3/6 to 5/10. The first time I made that jump I went on a -270BB swing that sent me right back down. The second time I hit another downswing, but was able to ride it out without moving down, and now I'm comfortable in that game. It took me over 10k hands to show a profit, but I made it. I also tweaked my game a bit in the process, so in a way I'm glad to have gone through it. Don't panic, but also remember that everyone's game could use improvement somewhere. I try (with marginal success) to look at downswings as opportunities to find ways to improve.
