I don't have the hand history but it went something like this:

I had JhTh in mid position, I limped with a few others. Flop is Ax9h8h. The one person in front of me checks, I bet with a flush draw and OESD. Everyone calls except the one guy who checked. The turn is a rag and I bet again. Everyone calls except one more person who folds. The river is another rag and there is only one guy left. Do I bet or check? If I bet, maybe he just has 2nd pair and since he didnt catch a card, he will fold thinking that I have something (which I dont). If I check, all those bets are wasted.

You might be able to fold him, Try and bet if you want, this is more judgement if anything. Mix it up, don't always bet, but dont always not bet.

i think you might as well take a stab at it. as you say, he may fold a second pair or even a weak ace that didn't improve. or he could have a busted draw too. if you fold him down with a river bet only 1 time out of 10, it's still a good bet.

friday night, i played at a live game and had 86s in the BB. flop was two hearts, i check-called 4way and turned the Ah. i check-raised and got heads up. then i peeked again at my cards and realized i had 86 of spades not hearts! (it was like 3 a.m., i was tired.) nevertheless, sensing weakness, i went ahead and bet, and the guy folded!

okay so that was not a semi bluff situation but i think the point is the same: you can bet the river headsup with nothing but aggression on your side, and still win.
