I'm very tight player and i just hate it when im dealt good cards without reads on a 'loose flop %' table (or any table for that matter) in the first 10 or so hands.

Is it exceptable to be ultra passive after being raised by any of the opponents until i get to know what cards they may have or plays they are likely to make. For example if i had a set on the flop and a third club came on the turn, where by i was raised how do i really know if that was the first time they had raised on the turn in the whole game or if they were bluffing.

How many players go straight into a game without reads?

I'm a real nit when it comes to seat selection so I always datamine or watch a table before sitting down (unless I already have notes on a few players)

Well, if I've never played at a given site / stakes I will usually start to datamine when it becomes clear that I will be moving up / changing sites very soon so I can usually at least determine who the TAG regulars are if nothing else. If I dont have stats on many players I also watch a couple of orbits before sitting down (I play shorthanded) - the first person to fulfill two of the following 4 requirements is the person I want to sit to the left of: i) Open limp, ii)cold call, iii)go to sd with air, iv)open-raise garbage oop.

Once I've played a few sessions at a given site/limit I usually have most of the regular fish "tagged" and also a warning note on all of the good TAG regulars. For example, at Ongame I have about 80% of the other players at my stakes colour coded, this usually means I can glance at a table and instantly know what to expect from the game.

Another important point - I never EVER post dead, always wait for the BB. If I still dont know roughly how most of the people play by the time the BB comes round then I let it go for another orbit, then of course I re-evaluate my seat selection. (This all goes to chit if I'm feeling tilty lol)

Sorry if my post has gone off the rails but I'm at work and can't concentrate too much on what I'm writing.

Wicked. I would use poker tracker if i were to datamine which i don't use enough. I find some of the auto rate features a bit misleading though e.g semi loose aggressive i found that most played almost like Tag's but went in on the blinds alot more than the tag's. I suppose i could choose to sit on the button if they where in sb or bb to me with this information . i will start datamining even though i'm a little impatient.

FWIW - I use PokerOffice and all I have to do is just open a table and it displays the HUD straight away and starts to record data.

Re: the autorate feature, you can (and should) edit the autorate rules to your own spec's. Either that or just look at the stats and ignore the icons.

"Straight out the box" it's better than PT during play (HUD includes your odds, outs, pot odds etc + the usual stats (customizable) but it just doesnt cut it when it comes to reviewing your stats and fixing leaks etc.

I play at Stars so datamining is right out.

Meanwhile, there's an active thread about autorating:
