In my rural town, there is a card room where people play donkey tournaments, and cheap table games.
The new fad is the "Dealer's choice" ring game. It's 2-4 spread limit, meaning that the blinds are 1 and 2 dollars, and you can bet or raise 2, 3, or 4 dollars on any street. When teh button moves to you, you can choose the game for that hand.
Omaha hi/low is popular. Razz, stud, holdem almost never get played. Draw games are even rarer. But the thing that ruins it, is that the house allows alot of crazy shit that I've never seen or heart of anywhere. Here are a few of the games I've seen.
Chicago 55's - the game plays like hold 'em except you're dealt five cards. There is a flop, turn, and river, with betting on every street. At showdown you an use any combination of board cards and hole cards to make teh best five card hand. Highest hole-card spade gets half the pot.
Fruit Cocktail - A variation on pineapple. You're dealt five cards, and you discard one on every street until you're playing just like hold 'em at the end.
Oceans 11 - Plays like omaha with each player getting 4 cards. You can use all, some, or none of your whole cards. They deal two streets after the river, leaving you with 7 cards on the board. Best five card combination of the 11 cards available to you win the pot. Also, it's high/low split.
is anyone here interested in ever playing any of these games?
Sorry this doesn't have much relevance but I was at this table the other night because I had nothing else to do and ended up losing about $100. I thought about it on the way home and realized that was the biggest waste of money I've ever spent.

How much is the rake?
Regardless, Omaha hi-lo should be beatable with people chasing any low/high draw. The other games, likely not so much.

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

Yeah, the omaha game is pretty straight forward. I'm just not that good at it myself. An experienced player would crush it because most of the players a this table aren't good at omaha either. It seems to me that people play at this table for a "change" from the holdem tournaments that run all the time. So Omaha just gives them some different dynamics to break up the monotony of their own gambling addictions.
Not 100% sure about the rake. But it's probably something like 10%, max $5. they usually rake the max because the pots get so big so fast with everybody chasing everything. Particularly in the Oceans 11 game. I mean, how can you fold ANYTHING in that game?

fruit cocktail sounds like it would be a fun home game
my friend had a game called chase the snake or something. You got 7 cards and you passed two to your left after every round. First hand went 5 way and every person had a full house.
I also dislike any game with wild cards

The thing about most of the games there (excpt maybe Chicago 55) is that there are so many cards it becomes strictly a game of chasing the nut hand, especially when the game is loose.
The thing about dealer choice game is that you want to play the games that maximize your positional advantage, this ofcourse means no stud games, and out of the 'standard' games I think 2-7 triple draw is probably the best one to deal on the button

Idk, if you can play NLO8 I'd like that one unless you can play lowball big bet games. Chicago 55 sounds freaking awesome.

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

Badugi and 7-2 are the obvious choices to me. Positional advantage is maximised, and if draw games are rare, these people will likely chase terrible hands, or better still have absolutely no idea how to play. I'd be happy to be playing O-h/l when out of position. The other games I'd very probably avoid big pots without the nuts. Oceans 11 sounds horrible, I think I'd just fold everything pre and sit it out.
Sounds like a fun evening, but I wouldn't really want to play like this for anything more than 10c blinds. It wouldn't be fun if it were serious, and losing $100 in a night is serious to me.

sounds like a crapshoot, 11 cards on board, any combination can be used, high/low split.
First off lets start with the option of not having a low, assuming that with 3 low cards on board on a 6 people or more table someone will always have a low
the chance of the board not allowing a low are very low
assume card 1,2 are different low cards, there are 26 other cards that would not make a low
so chances of not having a low are 26*25*24*23*22/50*49*48*47*46, which adds up to 3%
so playing for high only is not an option here, we need to play for low, there are most likely 3-5 low cards on board, counterfeighting does not exist, so you need strong wheel cards in order to play.
Also note that in this game there may be cases in which there are multiple flushes (for example diamond and club flush), so an A high flush on a non paired board is not a winner.
